"I don't like that you're going alone," Oakley said from her spot, leaning against the back of the couch."Well, neither do I," Kayce was buttoning up a shirt. "But Tate's in there and he did just ask for me."
"It couldn't wait until morning?" Oakley asked.
"Livestock Commissioner and his brother running for governor meet in public?" Kayce pulled his boots on and then looked at Oakley. "Probably not want he or my father wants in the paper...and honestly neither do I."
"He doesn't want your father to see the two of you...definitively not Beth," Oakley said. "We're only eleven days until the primaries."
"Yeah, he said that," Kayce walked over to Oakley, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "I'm sorry, baby."
"Don't be," Oakley placed both her hands on Kayce's chest. "Just please be careful."
"I love you," Kayce kissed her. "Go try and get some sleep with Tate."
"Wake me when you get back if I'm asleep," Oakley watched Kayce walk to the front door.
"Go to bed," Kayce smiled at her before leaving.
Oakley sighed and walked back into the bedroom after turning the lights out. She crawled in on Kayce's side, scooting to the middle and leaning her head on the pillow Tate was on. He must have felt her move and snuggled in closer to her, making Oakley smile.
She tried to stay up, but Tate was warm next to her and soon Oakley's shoulder was being shaken gently. She opened her eyes and looked up to see Kayce.
Swallowing, Oakley gently leaned up, removing herself from Tate as Kayce stepped back. He laced his fingers with Oakley's as they walked back out of the bedroom. It was still dark outside, but a lighter cast was over the windows, telling Oakey it was close to five or so. Once Oakley had shut the door gently, she really got to look at Kayce in the light.
"What happened?" Oakley reached up and placed her palm on Kayce's cheek.
"Jamie still has his ties to the District Attorney's office," Kayce said.
"Okay?" Oakley wasn't following.
"They pinged the cell phones of the two journalists who went missing," Kayce reached out and held Oakley's waist.
Oakley felt her heart drop. She tried to take a step back but Kayce didn't let her.
"They were on the ranch," Oakley whispered.
"They were on the ranch," Kayce nodded.
Oakley looked at the ground, her mind racing a mile a minute. Kayce took both his hands and lifted her face back up to his.
"They were pinged one more time about a mile north from North Camp but that's the last location their phones were," Kayce said, his eyes looking into Oakley's.
"I-I don't know what Rip did with the phones," Oakley shook her head. "H-He didn't tell me when I tried to ask."
"He took them though?" Kayce asked and Oakey nodded.
"Why did Jamie tell you this?" Oakley asked.
"I don't know," Kayce shrugged, his hands falling from Oakey's cheeks. "Saw him for maybe five minutes."
"How..." Oakley stopped, thinking maybe this wasn't the best time to ask.
"He was Jamie," Kayce nodded, knowing what she was going to say. "I need to go talk with Rip, get his side of the story."
"I'll come with you," Oakley went to walk around Kayce, but he stopped her with his hand on her arm.
"Tate's here," Kayce whispered. "I need you to stay with him."
