Epilogue
Five Years Later...
"We have to get up," Oakley giggled into Kayce's neck. "We have children and they're gonna want breakfast despite it being your day."
"Tate's watching 'em," Kayce mumbled.
"That does not help my worries," Oakley pressed her lips to Kayce's collarbone, peppering kiss over to his shoulder.
Oakley leaned up on her hands and looked down at Kayce. He was giving her a sleepy smile from where his head rested back on the pillows.
"Happy Birthday," Oakley smiled.
"Thank you," Kayce reached up and pulled her back down, pressing his lips to Oakley's for a sweet kiss.
"Do you feel wiser?" Oakley mumbled against Kayce's lips.
"Feel just like I did yesterday," Kayce rolled them over, holding Oakley in his arms.
"Sorry your day is sort of shadowed out by your father coming back," Oakley ran her fingers along Kayce's beard.
"It started out perfect," Kayce chuckled.
"Big day today," Oakley said softly.
Kayce took a deep breath and slowly nodded his head.
"Think we're ready for this?" Oakley asked.
"Are we ever ready for anything?" Kayce joked, squeezing her sides lovingly.
"I know we've talked about this, but I'm glad he didn't run for a second term," Oakley said honestly.
"I don't think he'd win," Kayce sighed. "Sure, rural Montana loved him...but the cities...they're changing and Dad's not gonna be the one to help them along."
"They'd need someone like you," Oakley mumbled.
"I ain't running for Governor, baby," Kayce laughed.
"Maybe not yet," Oakley smiled.
"Ever," Kayce rolled his eyes. "Running this place, being Livestock Commissioner, keeping up with three kids is enough for me...not to mention you."
"I cause you no problems," Oakley giggled through her teeth.
"Whatever you say, baby," Kayce chuckled.
Oakley smiled, leaning up and kissing Kayce before she sat up and stretched. A few minutes later and they were both walking down the stairs, Kayce heading into the kitchen for some coffee while Oakley went to the kids. The television was heard from the living room. Tate was on the couch, half asleep again while Lee was watching some duck hunting show that was playing. Evelyn was at the small table in the corner, coloring.
Oakley walked over to her daughter and brushed her hair back before kissing the top of her head.
"Y'all remember what today is?" Oakley asked them all.
"Look, Mummy," Evelyn held up the picture.
It was of her and Kayce, in a field of wildflowers with the words Happy Birthday scribbled over it, both words misspelled but Oakley thought it was perfect.
"Tate? Lee?" Oakley looked at her boys.
"Got it," Tate stood up with a box in his hands and walked around to the table, setting it down next to Evelyn's picture.
Oakley brushed some of his hair back, Tate now standing slightly taller than Oakley. Lee walked up after Tate and handed Oakley his small brown bag. Lee had drawn some sort of deer on it and Oakley placed it next to Tate's.
