Once Kayce turned his truck off, the diesel sound stopped, and Oakley realized how quiet it had been on the drive home. Kayce had picked her up around lunchtime and she was now looking at the foreman's cabin in front of her.
"Everything okay?" Kayce asked, looking over at her.
"Yeah," Oakley nodded. "Just...everything's fine."
She opened her door but before she could do anything Kayce had jogged around to her side, holding his hand out for her to take. Oakley grabbed it, slowly letting herself slip from the truck and touch the ground. Kayce's arm immediately went around her waist.
"I'm okay," Oakley smiled at him.
"Humor me," Kayce rolled his eyes.
Kayce got her inside and sat down on the couch. Oakley looked around the cabin, sensing it hadn't been preoccupied for very much the last week or so. Kayce came back in from grabbing her hospital bag. He shut the door and shrugged off his jacket.
"Let me make you some tea," Kayce mumbled as he walked into the bedroom to sit her bag down but brought out her ice packs and medication.
Oakley raised an eyebrow, watching him then walk back out and over to the kitchen and grab the kettle.
"I've got to pick up Tate here later this afternoon," Kayce said turning on the stove. "He's with his grandfather."
Oakley nodded even though she knew Kayce wasn't looking at her.
"Gator said he's making Salisbury steak for all of us tonight," Kayce then walked over to the freezer and pulled out the drawer. "I think Beth is in town so maybe you can see her later too?"
He sat Oakley's ice packs down in there so they would start to get cold again.
"Sounds nice," Oakley mumbled, her eyes watching Kayce bounce around.
"But if you don't feel like anything you just have to tell me," Kayce was sitting the pill bottles out on the counter and the note from Oakley's doctor explaining what and how to take them.
"Kayce..." Oakley felt a tug of a smile on her lips.
The kettle started to whistle.
"If all you wanna do is stay in bed then you can do that," Kayce poured the hot water into a mug and then grabbed a tea bag from one of the cabinets.
Oakley watched him grab some honey and squeeze a little in her mug before taking a spoon and mixing it. He walked back over to her, holding the mug out. Oakley took it but then grabbed Kayce's arm before he could walk away.
"Hey..." She smiled up at him.
"What's wrong?" Kayce looked down at her.
"Right now?" Oakley laughed. "You're going one hundred miles a minute, babe."
Kayce looked sheepish before he cleared his throat and sat down on the coffee table across from Oakley. She sat her mug on the table next to her before scooting to the edge of the couch.
"Take a breath," She smiled at Kayce. "I'm home."
Kayce got a funny look on his face before he moved to sit next to Oakley, leaning against the armrest. Oakley moved so she was resting against Kayce, his arms wrapping around her. Oakley tucked her head under Kayce's chin, hearing his heartbeat slow down under his shirt.
"What time do you have to get Tate?" Oakley asked, feeling more comfortable in Kayce's arms than she had in a long time, pushing away that nagging feeling.
"Said I'd pick him up around four," Kayce mumbled.
"Maybe I could go with you?" Oakley leaned her head up.
