Friday Afternoon
Oakley sighed as she leaned up, stretching her back. It was late in the afternoon, and she knew she'd have to leave to grab Tate soon. But it was also almost time to feed the twins, and the kitchen was only half-packed. Her phone started to ring from the counter, Kayce's name showing.
Kayce had been all the way over to Billings this morning and Oakley wasn't sure when he'd be back. After kissing her goodbye and leaving with Tate, he said he'd call her but that didn't end up happening. She got a quick text from him around lunchtime, saying he thought he'd be done early, but Oakley knew to never hold her breath.
"Hey," Oakley said, answering.
"Hey, baby," Kayce said, and Oakley could tell he was driving. "Look, I'm headed to grab Tate if you haven't left already?"
"Bless you," Oakley smiled.
"Tough day?" Kayce asked.
"In a way...you?" Oakley pushed one of the boxes with her foot.
"Call turned out to be some teenagers playing a joke," Kayce sighed. "Though I think we scared 'em enough they won't be doing it again."
"You could have punished them by bringing them to me," Oakley chuckled.
"Punishment by packing?" Kayce asked.
"Packing is awful," Oakley looked at the boxes around her. "They should make people who break the law pack because I bet, they wouldn't break the law again."
"Maybe not," Kayce chuckled. "I uh...talked to Jamie this afternoon."
"You did?" Oakley's ears perked up. "What'd he say?"
"I told him we'd be out probably by Sunday...and that gave him a week to move in before Dad came back," Kayce said.
"And Beth," Oakley nodded. "So, is he gonna move in next week?"
"Think so," Kayce said. "Acted like he was at least."
"Do you think he'll back out?" Oakley asked.
"It's Jamie," Kayce sighed. "I don't know what to think but something tells me to not think too hard cause it'll probably be the opposite of what I think will happen."
"Well...if he needs someone to watch his son, I can do that," Oakley said. "I'll just put him with the twins, and I guess start the Dutton Daycare Center."
"You don't have to do that," Kayce said. "You can have whatever boundary you need with Jamie."
"I'm trying to be helpful...welcoming," Oakley frowned.
"I know you are, baby," Kayce sighed. "But all of this is...big. And I don't want anything making you uncomfortable or stressed out."
"You should see me now," Oakley glanced down at her outfit consisting of Kayce's shirt and a pair of shorts.
"I bet you look beautiful," Kayce smiled.
"Nice save," Oakley giggled.
"What're you wearing?" Kayce asked and purposely lowered his voice.
"One of your sister's dresses," Oakley snapped, and she heard Kayce groan out of irritation.
"You're no fun," Kayce muttered.
"I'm trying to pack so your brother can move in fast enough, so your father and sister won't kill him," Oakley shrugged.
"I love you," Kayce said. "Try not to worry about all of that."
