(3rd person pov)
Neteyam never cared for a mate. In the forest he was forced to be the perfect soldier and put on a show front for the clan showing them that he could a good of leader like his father.
However because of that the work load, the constant training Neteyam never wanted to have a mate. He saw how much it took a toll on his father having to deal with the Sky People, The Clan and him, his mother and siblings. He didn't want that responsibility.
Moving to Awa'atlu was a breath of fresh air for him. Even though it was a drastic change and the feeling was very overwhelming being as he had never once been around so much water or the fact that he would never miss the humidity of the forest again it was still different.
However he was no longer subjected to the duties of being the next Olo'eyktan and that he liked. Sure he was still the oldest son of Toruk Makto and people did stare at notice how he was indeed the "perfect" child when standing next to Lo'ak but he was allowed to breathe on his own accord and make mistakes.
Then he saw him. Aonung. The oldest son of the Olo'eyktan and Tsahik. It wasn't a love at first sight kind of thing. Neteyam could full on tell that Aonung was gonna be hostile. From the way he circled around them and stared them down and to how he spoke about their appearance.
He wasn't stupid. Besides his striking features Neteyam was a child of Neytiri after all he was not like Lo'ak. His brother has gotten a crush the moment he lied eyes on Tsireya.
It wasn't until later that Neteyam started to notice the little things. Like how scared and Jumpy Aonung could be. It never failed to amaze him how Aonung would jump even at the slightest touches.
He would've never imagined the male to be so jumpy especially with how they first met but it was always something Neteyam admired.
He started to notice other things too. How the male was more careful and helpful around children. He was happy and calm and actually took pride in when a kid did something right. It made Neteyam think of what he would be like with kids of his own.
Definitely the helicopter parent. The thought was always ironic but then again Aonung was always the more protective out of the group. Always stressing and snapping at them. It was totally different from when Neteyam caught him bullying his sister but even enemies can become friends.
However that was well in the past and the group was close. Their was still the obvious fighting and bickering between Lo'ak and Aonung but it always stayed just that. Non threatening bickering. They acted more like brothers now anyways at least in Neteyam eyes.
"You are staring again. It's very creepy bro", Neteyam jumped slightly and turned to Lo'ak who now after 3 years had gotten slightly taller than him. It was only an inch or two but Lo'ak loved to rub it in his face. He was now taller.
"What are you even looking at", Lo'ak stared at his older brother before trying to track Neteyam line of sight with his own eyes before the older brother pushed him slightly. "Nothing why are you looking over my shoulder".
"I wouldn't be if you weren't standing here staring at people like a creep", Lo'ak laughed and Neteyam rolled his eyes before glancing back at Aonung he had gotten considerably taller over the 3 years. His muscles more define and sculpted as well as the warrior tattoos he had gotten over the few years.
