It's been almost 2 weeks since I have been grounded for not coming straight home, stupid in my personal opinion but whatever. I have been on my absolute best behavior so that I can have my life back, Just my luck the second I make a friend I can't hang out with said friend. I sit my lunch tray down meeting Ella at our usual spot, She is grinning from ear to ear.
"You look way too happy for it to be fish stick day," I say with my same old sarcastic tone.
"Enough about your nasty sticks of fish you will never guess who just invited us to a party tonight" Ella paused for a second "Carter Campbell!".
I don't know if she was expecting me to be as star-struck as she was that the hot, stoner bad boy who has been in 7th grade for 2 years noticed her existence but I can almost guarantee he did not invite "us " to a party. I raised an eyebrow and questioned "Us"?
"Okay okay so he had no idea who you were but he said I get a plus one and milkshake Soc boy was busy so"??? Ella protested.
I laughed not sure what was funnier that Carter has had classes with me or that Kyle's new nickname is Milkshake Soc Boy. "As much fun as it sounds to be unnoticed at a high school party, I am still very much grounded in case you have forgotten"
Carter is friends with a lot of high schoolers since you know he is supposed to be one so typically his parties have upper-class kids there. Mainly all greasers that do lots of drugs and drink and I don't know spin the bottle? I've never been to one of these things.
She pleaded "Don't you think you will be ungrounded by then? It's been a few weeks, Please Bay I don't wanna go without you, Maybe you can sneak out?"
Clearly, my new friend needs me to be a part of her first high school party experience and what kind of friend would I be if I left her hanging? I smirk "Okay you've convinced me, Can you meet me by the park just before 11:00 PM."
Ella nodded and cheered, proud of herself for persuading me. I tossed the nasty school lunch in the garbage and began to plot how I was going to sneak out without the gang of boys who seemed to always watch my every move.
🖤
It's after dinner, and Darry is in the living room browsing the paper and watching TV. I did the dishes and now I am not so patiently waiting on the front porch for the sun to set. Soda is out with his friend Steve another member of our gang and some girls. He's a real ladies' man. Pony and Johnny come drifting in they had gone into town to get some smokes and toilet paper.
What would we do without smokes and toilet paper?
"Can I bum one of those?" I ask leaning my back against the side of our house and playing with my untied shoelaces.
Johnny smirked before reaching into the paper bag and throwing a roll of tp at me almost hitting me in the head. I catch it and give him an unserious glare. "Not quite what I was asking for. What are you two getting into tonight?" I ask trying to make sure they weren't going to a certain Campbell party.
Just as they were about to respond a black leather jacket with legs that reeked of smoke strolled up, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and one tucked behind his ear. Dallas Winston. Dallas also known as Dally is like the fourth brother I did not ask for. He had a tough upbringing, he is only 17 but he told me stories where he used to walk the streets of New York in gangs and beat up anybody that looked at him funny. He is cold and tougher than the rest of the boys. He just got out of the slammer for being drunk and yelling at a cop. A lovely addition to my brother's gang.
"Stayin' out of trouble bug?" He speaks with such confidence. Don't get me started on this stupid nickname.
When I was younger, I had a fascination with insects. I loved searching for bugs and capturing them in containers, making sure to poke holes in the lids so they could breathe. Although catching lightning bugs was enjoyable, my absolute favorite insects to find were ladybugs. One day, Dally saw me with a jar full of them and told me that they would bring me good luck. From that day on, I became known as Baylee Bug, and the nickname just stuck with me.
I don't think the ladybugs brought me any extra luck, especially after my parents died so I stopped looking for them.
I respond full of sarcasm but somewhat seriously "I mean I haven't served time in jail but I can't seem to get free of Darrell's prison sentence".
Pony glares at me and babbles on about how I can't fly under the radar and how trouble is my middle name blah blah blah. The golden child is annoying.
Dallas tells me I better behave myself or I'll end up like him. I kinda like the idea of everyone being scared of me. Pony, Johnny, and Dally head off to get into some kind of trouble I am sure... they said they were going to go to the drive-in to watch a western love story but I am certain Dallas Winston's middle name really is "Trouble". I head inside to finish convincing Darry I had a long day and I'm turning in early. Fingers crossed he goes to bed soon too.
🖤🚬🐞🧻
Chapter Notes:
Sorry for the short chapter, I promise the next one will not disappoint. Do we honestly think Baylee is going to get away with sneaking out and going to a party all while still being grounded? She really Is starting to seem like a little Dallas Winston.
