I run towards Ella with a huge grin on my face. "Happy Birthday!" I exclaim, pulling her in for a tight hug. We decided to meet at Shake Shake to enjoy a strawberry milkshake while going over the plans for her party tonight.
Carter ended up being right about the note Miss. Webb insisted I get signed. I had brought Jess an old birthday card that Darry had signed for me and he copied his signature perfectly. When I went to hand it to Miss. Webb, she barely even glanced at it before nodding and telling me to take my seat so I shoved the useless fake signed paper in my backpack, smiling over to Ella knowing her birthday plans were a go.
I slurped on my shake while Ella, Carter, Jess, and I discussed the party planning. As usual, the party was going to be held at Carter's house, but this time I had full permission to attend and would not have to sneak out of any windows.
Darry gave me strict orders to not drink, smoke, or have any sort of fun, and to be home before 11:00 PM. However, since I had been doing well in school, had not gotten into any trouble, and had the courtesy to ask permission, he said he was going to trust me and allow me to go.
"What about beer? Ella asked while checking off a list of everything that was supposed to make her party perfect.
Resting a hand on Ella's bouncing leg, Carter apologizes, "Sorry babe, my keg guy is out of town."
Ella started chewing on the end of her pencil, no doubt trying to come up with some sort of plan to obtain some sort of alcohol for her party.
"I can probably snag a bottle of vodka from my old man" Jess proposed.
Ella's eyes lit up "Really?"
"Yeah, consider it a birthday present. It would only be enough for us though, everyone else is going to have to bring their own."
Ella stopped gnawing on her pencil long enough to wrap Jess in a side hug as a token of her appreciation. "One bottle should be enough for us four," She said now checking another box off of her perfect party to-do list.
"Well I won't be drinking" I remind them all about the rules and restrictions I have for me to even be allowed to attend the party in the first place.
"But Bayyy" Ella whined dragging out the end of my name. "You are my best friend and it's my birthday, you have to drink with me".
"I am sure you can drink enough for the both of us" I was about to say before I was interrupted by the bitchy blonde bimbos walking over to our table. Invading out personal space.
"Who's having a party" Judy asks smacking on her gum between every word.
"None of your business" I was quick to retort glaring at her.
I have been trying to avoid Judy Johnson for the past few days, as she is the last person I want to see right now. The nightmares haven't stopped, and I am still struggling to get enough sleep, aside from the few moments when I doze off in class or during lunch. She doesn't know that her brother haunts me in my nightmares every time I close my eyes but she sure as hell doesn't let me forget what I did to him every waking moment.
She wants me to pay for what I did to her brother but she wasn't there. She didn't see how messed up Carter and Jess looked. I did what I had to do to save them. She wouldn't have cared if it was the other way around but it wasn't and her brother got put in the hospital by a little greaser girl.
"Just get outta here" Jess seethed.
"Or what?" She challenged stepping closer to us.
I stood up, letting her know she did not scare or intimidate me. I narrowed my eyes glaring further into hers. Jess, Carter, and Ella all stood up beside me. There were four of us and three of them, I liked those odds.
