I lay awake for about an hour staring at the ceiling before I saw the glow of the TV in the living room turn off. Assuming Darry had finally gone to his bedroom I quietly slipped on my black Converse and tucked in some pillows to look like me sleeping. It's about 11:17 pm and I was just hoping Ella waited for me at the park as it took longer than I expected for Darry to turn in. I tip-toe on my creaky ass floor to the window, slide it open and the cold air fills my room blowing in my torn curtains. I grabbed a hoodie, dropped my bag outside, and jumped out.
I started running towards the park, the street lights guiding my way. To my surprise, Ella was smoking a cig on the swings when I ran up. "Sorry I'm late, didn't wanna take any chances of Darry being up" I apologized while trying to catch my breath from running all the way here.
Ella grinned "I knew you wouldn't abandon me"
We started heading towards Carter's house which wasn't far from Bucks Bar, My brothers, and their friends are known to hang out there and play pool, to my knowledge Pony and Soda are still out so I need to avoid the main street at all cost. I am taking no chances of being caught sneaking out, or going to a high school party all while being grounded.
Maybe trouble is my middle name.
We walk up to the house, The music from the inside is blaring. "Do we knock?" Ella asked.
"I don't think they would even be able to hear if we did knock" I make the executive decision to just walk on in. Kids are everywhere. I see some familiar faces from school and a ton of high schoolers this is a good time for nobody to know who I am, so nobody can tell Pony they saw me here. Not sure where to go Ella and I make our way over to a keg.
"Do you know how to use one of these?" She asked
"Not a clue" I confess.
"Ella you made it" a slurring voice screams from behind us. A very drunk Carter stumbles over. "I am so happy you came and you brought a friend let me get you, ladies, a drink".
I have to admit Carter's brain may be fried from all the green that he smokes but the way Ella lights up when he's around makes me very happy for my new friend. As the night went on Ella eventually left me for beer pong after Carter practically begged for her to be his partner.
I am sitting on the kitchen counter swinging my legs back and forth to some music casually drinking whatever Carter handed me in a red plastic cup when I make eye contact with a boy sitting on the other side of the room. He motions with his pointer finger to come to him and I can't hide the confused look on my face as one of my eyebrows rises. I jump off the counter and make my way over to the group of high schoolers who are all sitting around in a circle.
"Never seen you around before," one of the greaser boys said.
I tried to play it cool "I've been around". I shrug while taking a sip of my mystery drink.
