The rumble is happening a couple blocks away at a vacant lot across from the old playground that had some broken swings and a rusted slide. It was starting to rain when Ella and I made our way behind a parked car to watch the brawl from a distance. We were close enough to hear what was going on, but far enough away that nobody would notice us. We stayed squatted behind the car peeking over the side to watch as the Soc's walked up looking as preppy as ever in their letter man jackets and khaki pants.
"There's your brother.. Ella noted pointing to Darry standing ahead of everybody else and eye to eye with an older Soc. ..He is such a bad ass".
I was scanning over all the Greasers that stood behind Darry. "Do you see Jess?"
Ella peered over the many black T-shirts shaking her head "No".
All of a sudden the air filled with shouting, The first punch was thrown and the two different sides merged together as one. Fists were flying everywhere. I saw Darry knock a guy out with one punch, Steve head-butt a pair that were ganging up on Soda, and Two-bit tackling jocks to the ground. The rain started to come down even harder causing the empty lot to turn to a mud pit.
We watched like it was the climax of a movie, unable to look away. Occasionally letting out an "Ooh that had to hurt" The heavy rain was starting to make it difficult to see everyone and things were starting to escalate quickly.
A familiar voice caught my attention "Don't be a hero Grease". I know I heard that somewhere before. I look over and see the same drunk Soc that came back for Johnny the other day, outside the house. He stood pointing a blade at a young Greaser who was standing tall in front of his friend that laid limp on the ground covered in a mixture of blood and mud, The same stance as I stood days earlier in front of Johnny.
Of course a Soc brought a blade to a skin fight.
I get a better look at the kid on the ground and the realization rushes in "Oh Shit, Its Jess and Carter". I gasped to Ella.
"What do we do"? El panicked.
I looked around and picked up a large rock that was sitting by my feet. I raised my eyes to meet hers.
"Bay, Don't" she begged.
Ignoring her plea I quickly stood and ran towards the Soc that was holding my friends at knife point. He was arched low enough that within in seconds I jumped on his back and was bashing the rock to his temple. I grunted as he went down and I went down with him. I scrambled back to my feet quickly, making myself ready for him to retaliate. It took me a minute to realize he was not getting back up and he laid still on the ground with blood gushing from his head.
I was breathing hard. I dropped the bloody rock right as Ella ran up. "Holy shit Bay, did you kill him"? I didn't acknowledge her question, I think I blacked out. I turn around and help Carter get Jess to his feet.
