When Johnny and I made our way back to the house, Darry's truck was not there assuming he was still at work. We walked in the front door only to be met with Two-bit and Pony watching mickey mouse on the tv. There was an awkward silence and Pony looked back at us.
Two-bit taking a sip of his beer and not taking his eyes off the black and white mouse asked "Where'd you two run off to?" Pony was still looking at Johnny and I, I didn't want to give up my secret spot and my silence was loud. Johnny spoke up fast saving us all from the awkward long silence "We just went to get some milkshakes."
Two-Bit nodded acknowledging our response and went to take another sip of his beer.
"...So where is the dad to be?" I sputtered out. Johnny softly whacked the back of my head as a way of telling me to shut up. Pony looked at me with anger in eyes, and Two-bit did a spit take in complete shock clearly not up to date on the news.
"Who is the dad to be??" Two-bit asked curiously.
Pony stood from the couch he and Two-Bit were sitting on and pointed a finger in my direction his eyebrows furrowed together Pony scolded "That was a private conversation Bay, and not your place or secret to go around telling people."
Two-bit not even interested in the television anymore grabbed Pony's shoulder still confused and asked "Who did you get pregnant??" Pony rolled his eyes "Geez Two-Bit nobody, it's not mine, okay?" Pony retorted with annoyance.
"Who the heck is having a baby?" Two-Bit asked befuddled.
"I am." Soda confessed. Standing in the entry way of the front door. It was obvious that he has been crying, his eyes were all puffy and cheeks were cherry red. Once again the silence was loud, everyone taking in what he just said. Soda pushed past where Johnny and I still stood right in front of the door, Steve following in tow. Soda turned to face everyone rubbing his hand on the back of his neck and grabbed Two-Bits half drank beer out of his hand. Soda took a swig "Sandy's Pregnant, she uhh said it was mine."
"You should make her get a DNA test." I suggest.
Soda crosses his arms "What?"
"I'm just saying I see her all around town with that Soc, she only sees you in private. Who knows who else she is fooling around with" I shrugged.
I really was taking into consideration what Johnny and I talked about at the secret spot. I wasn't trying to be complicated. I know Soda was upset and that probably wasn't what he wanted to hear, but before buying any baby wipes all I am saying is I would make sure that this is his problem to take care of. Sandy is a nice girl and all but I heard that she gets around. I don't want her taking advantage of Soda's big heart.
"That's enough Baylee." Pony snapped. Very aware of the tension in the room.
"What? I am just saying to make sure.." I tried to explain myself but was rudely interrupted by my youngest brother.
"Isn't it past your bedtime." Pony argued.
My blood was boiling. I wanted to jump over the couch that separated me and the golden child and hit him where it hurts. My intentions with what I said were reasonable in my mind and I was only trying to be helpful which clearly was getting miscommunicated. I looked over at Soda who was still holding on to Two-Bits beer with one hand and rubbing his temple with the other.
I started to defend myself again looking at Soda and before I could get another word out he held out his palm motioning me to stop talking and calmly said "Bay maybe you should just go get ready for bed, it's late."
My muscles tensed and my nostrils flared. Was he seriously defending Ponyboy right now? He didn't even wanna hear me out? I had the urge to scream I was so frustrated. Why won't anybody listen to me??I am trying to help. I let out a loud "UGHH" catching everybody off guard.
