Dallas and I stood quite as Sandy stood from sitting on our front steps. "Hi" she said sheepishly tugging at her sweater clearly uncomfortable.
"Soda is working late tonight". I blurt out
Why would she show up at our house? What if her boyfriend knew she was here and this was a trap. What if she really did know who the father of the baby was and is here to break Soda the news.
"I was actually here to talk to you" Sandy confessed nervously twirling at her hair.
"Oh?" I questioned
Commence dramatic music
Dally intervened "I'm gonna go raid the fridge for some beer and let you ladies talk". With that Dal walked past Sandy on the front porch and the awkward silence resurfaced. I stood unsure what to even say.
"Sorry about earlier" I spat "I was just trying to defend my brother" Earlier today all I felt was rage when I looked at Sandy. I couldn't help but feel like she was ruining our lives that finally felt like they were getting back on the right track.
She let out a sigh "I know...." She paused before continuing with a sad expression.. "Look Soda is the sweetest human alive and in another universe maybe we could have ended up together but my parents would disown me if I brought home a greaser....or had a baby with one".
My eyes shot up at her sneaky confession "So it's not his?" I question
Sandy looked down "It's not Soda's baby".
I didn't ask any personal questions because it really is none of my business how far along she actually was, if she was already pregnant while sneaking around with my brother? She didn't look pregnant at all if I am being honest with you. My food baby sticks out further than her belly. I can't deny I had a ton of questions but I was doing my best not to pry. It had felt like a weight had lifted off my shoulders knowing that Soda's life wasn't going to be ruined.
"When are you going to tell him?" I ask
"Tonight." She says wiping a tear escaping from her eye, taking a seat back on the stairs
I rested my hand on her shoulder, even though I hated what she did to Soda I knew this was not an easy conversation for her to have and I knew this was going to crush him.
Right on que and covered in sweat and grease Soda walked through our front gate with the same surprised and confused reaction that Dal and I had.
"What's going on?" He asked moving in closer
"I'll let you guys talk" I stood up and made my way inside with Dally.
When I shut our front door I immediately ran past Dally drinking a beer and watching the television. I jumped over to the couch and peeked through the blinds that saw out on the front porch, doing my best to ease drop on the very serious and life changing conversation Soda and Sandy were having.
"What'd she say?" Dally asked intrigued.
"Parents would disown her, baby not his" I summarized catching Dallas up on the baby daddy drama.
"Geeeez that boy lucked out" He smirked taking another swig of his drink
I turned to Dal and annoyingly told him to "Sushhh" I turned back towards the window trying to tune in on what Sandy was actually saying.
My comment got me a somewhat jokingly swat at my behind with a nearby newspaper.
"Ow.. Hey!" I declared
"It's rude to listen in on a private adult conversation...Why don't you go finish your chores before Darry gets home and gets on you for getting suspended today" Dally scoffed.
I don't question Dally when he is in a clearly "Take Charge" kinda mood.
"Fine". I huffed and went to clean my room.
About an hour as passed and Soda has not made it inside yet. I had picked up my room, folded some laundry and did the dishes all while waiting for my brother to come in after finding out he was not the father and see what kind of mood the news would put him in.
"I'm gonna take the trash out" I say to Dally who's eyes are still glued to the television.
As soon as I open the front door I am met with Sandy and Soda hugging it out with blood shot eyes and dripping snot. They both turn to look at me. Soda runs a finger under his nose and sniffles.
"Oh, Sorry" I apologize and start to walk past them with my bag of trash.
Soda gives me a weak smile and grabs the bag from me "I got it Bay"
"I better get going" Sandy sniffled to Soda.
"Take care" Soda replied kissing her forehead and making his way to the trash can on the side of the house.
I was waiting in the same spot when he walked back up. "Are you okay?" I asked with concern.
"Yeah..I actually think everything is going to be okay" Soda expressed.
I wrapped my arms around him giving Soda the biggest bear hug. I let out a sigh of relief feeling like I have been holding my breathe for days now. I looked up still hugging my brother "For what it's worth Sodapop, You would have made a great dad".
