My eyes shot open as I am startled awake by Pony shaking me. "What the hell"? I ask.

"Get up, The social service lady is here todo a check in". Pony explains hoping around trying to get his other leg in his pants.

I jump out of bed and quickly do my best to remake the bed and shove the junk laying on my floor under the bed and out of site. I put on some sweats and throw my hair in a bun before running out and seeing what kind of mess the rest of the house is in. I wonder how long this poor lady has been standing on our front porch waiting to be let in. Darry goes over and cracks the front door just enough to pop his head out "Excuse us, We will be with you in just a moment". He says in his best dad voice and hastily closes the door before she could answer keeping her waiting on the front porch.

The boys are running around grabbing laundry off the floor and cleaning the toothpaste stains on the mirror. I do my part by throwing away some Chinese boxes from lasts nights dinner that never made it in the trash can.

"Who was suppose to do the dishes last night" Darry huffed scrubbing away at the mountain of dirty plates and plastic cups.

"It was Pony's turn" I protested. Grabbing a dirty pot from off the stove and throwing it in the fridge for a temporary fix.

"I was gonna do the dishes after I finished reading last night, but I ended up falling asleep". Pony explained.

"Chores and homework are priority before anything so situations like this can be avoided". Darry quietly scolded. He waved his hands around in the air in his best attempt to dry them before looking over everything. "Okay, Let's do this".

The social service lady..also known as Linda has always been really nice to us and our situation. After our parents passed away and Darry got custody the court ordered surprise pop up visits from Linda here to make sure that Darry was handling all the responsibilities as a parent/guardian and maintaining a proper living environment. One of the main reasons why Dar is so strict about homework and chores is you never know when Linda is going to make her debut. Typically she comes by at least once a month. We were just very unprepared this morning....clearly.

Soda, Pony and I are all sitting anxiously on the couch watching as Linda makes her walk around the house with her clipboard in hand. She jots down something as she walks out of the Soda and Pony's bedroom and goes into mine. She observed the freshly rinsed dishes before opening the fridge and glancing inside.

She totally sees the pot I shoved in there.

She took a sniff of the milk we had in there causing her to scrunch her nose and squint her eyes together before putting it back and closing the fridge. I guess it was outdated. She makes her way back to us all in the living room giving us a slight smile. "You can all relax, the house looks great..although I would not drink that milk" she chuckles

We all give a little chuckle with her because when the lady that decides if Darry is fit to be our guardian and not split us up into different foster homes tells a joke you laugh.

She begins to ask Darry some other questions taking note of every detail. "....and how's work going?".

"Work has been good, Busy". She nods. "I have actually been having to working late a lot these past fews days trying to meet a deadline with this builder" Darry adds.

She looks over and Pony and I "How do you two manage with Darry working late"?

"Lot's of Pizza and Chinese food" I blurt out.

Darry glares at me but Linda smiles and gave me a wink.

"I try to always have someone here with them while I am at work if not Soda then one of our other friends". Darry assured.

Linda went on and asked many more basic questions. Pretty much the same as every other time. Darry answered with shining colors, He was a grade A bullshitter acting as if I wasn't just suspended from school and caught at a high school party.

"Now I did have one concern....." Linda stated just as we thought we got away with murder. She looked down at her clipboard before looking back at Darry "Why is the window boarded up in Baylee's room".

I felt the room fill with tension. I couldn't help but pick at my finger nails not knowing how Darry was going to explain that one. Oh Baylee just has a habit of sneaking out of windows to go to high school parties and smoke the devils lettuce with Mr. knight in shinning armor Jeremy.

Darry clears his throat "Oh, That. A ball actually went through the window and we just have not gotten around to getting it fixed yet, but it's just temporary" Darry lies as he looks over at us. We all nod in agreement.

Linda looking satisfied with his bullshit answer closes her notebook and stands from her chair. "Let's just get that fixed sooner rather then later, but things as always look fantastic here, Darrell you are doing a wonderful job. Taking care of teenagers at any age is difficult, none the less at your age." She shakes his hand as she says her goodbyes and he walks her out.

We all let out a sigh of relief and I throw my head back on the couch. I better go throw that milk away.
