Lately, life has been as normal as it has been in a while, for me anyway. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-bit have been going on a lot more dates, Soda and Steve have been putting in extra hours at work, and Dallas and his friend Tim have been MIA for about 2 weeks now. He called Darry from New York, but Darry wouldn't spill the actual conversation. Just that he was okay, and he would be back soon. Darry and Julie are stuck up each other's butt 24/7 which is good for me because he isn't all in my business. Not that I have any business to be involved in. Jess and I have been hanging out almost every day. We have been going to the drive-in movies, browsing the record shop, listening to music, and keeping the memory of Carter alive by slurping down a milkshake at our favorite spot at least once a week.
The phone rang and I raced to it, hoping it would be Dally calling to check in and I could bombard him with questions.
"Hello, Curtis Residence," I say quickly and out of breath.
A girl with a high-pitched tone was on the other end of the line. "Hi, Is Ponyboy there"? She asked.
"You sound way too pretty to be calling for Pony, are you sure you don't have the wrong brother". I joke making the girl on the other end of the phone laugh.
Pony paused as he heard my sarcastic comment, then strode in from the kitchen with irritation etched on his face, reaching for the phone. "Give me the phone, Bay," he demanded, swiftly pursuing me as I darted around the couch.
"May I ask who's calling?" I struggled to keep the phone out of my brother's reach, but the cord limited my movement. The girl on the other end chuckled, clearly overhearing the playful struggle between my brother and me. "Tell him it's Cherry," she said with a hint of amusement in her voice.
The name makes me stop in my tracks. "Wait, you're a Soc"? before she got the chance to answer Pony grabbed the phone from me quickly apologizing and darting eye daggers at me. "You are talking to a Stupid Soc"? I shockingly ask. "Beat it, Baylee. I am on the phone" he responds. I roll my eyes and head outside.
I am sitting on the front porch people watching when Two-bit comes strolling up. "Hey Kiddo, What are you getting into today".
"Did you know Pony was dating a Soc"? I fire back completely ignoring his question.
Two-Bit flashed me his familiar mischievous grin, accompanied by a chuckle that could easily be recognized even in pitch darkness. "You talkin' about Cherry Valance?" I nodded in response. "Nah, they're not dating. She's got a boyfriend. They're just friends."
"I think the boys have terrible taste in women". I joke noticing as Darry and Julie walk up.
"What a compliment," Julie says sarcastically, putting her hand to her heart. Darry laughs, shaking his head at us.
Julie breaks character and gives me a hug pulling out a chocolate bar from her purse and handing it to me.
Julie and I have grown much closer over the past few weeks, despite our rough start. She's a great match for my sarcasm and even brings me candy. So I decided to give her a chance. I'm starting to enjoy having her around, especially when she bails me out of trouble and persuades Darry to go easy on me, giving me more freedom.
Jess is over for dinner, Darry ordered some pizza to save us from a potentially disastrous meal made by Soda. The house is full and loud as it is most of the time. The kitchen is full of chatter and laughter, everyone seems so happy. The Phone rings and I eagerly jump up hoping it's Dally calling to say he's coming home.
"Hello, Curtis Residence" I answer.
Nobody says anything, but I hear a faint breathing so I know somebody is there.
"Dally, Is that you"?
The laughter from the kitchen seemed to die down, and Darry came over, reaching for the phone. I shook my head because nobody had said anything yet. Darry took the phone, assuming it was Dally. "Hello," he said into the phone. Then he pulled the phone back, looked at it, and then back up at me. "They hung up. What did he say to you?" Darry asked.
"Nobody said anything. I just assumed it was him."
"Hope everything is ight," Johnny says from the kitchen.
Julie tries to reassure us by saying, "Probably just a wrong number." However, Darry and I exchange panicked looks, indicating that we are not convinced. Just then, a knock on the door grabs everybody's attention. Two-Bit, trying to lighten the mood, breaks the tension by shouting, "Alright, pizza is here! I'm starving.".

Chapter Notes:
Literally all I can think of right now is the Spongebob episode of the hash-slinging slasher, where Squidward goes "And the phone will ring, and there will be nobody there". 🤣
Anywhoooo I FINALLY UPDATED!!! YAYYY!!!
