My leg bounces beneath the table as Aarons dad gives another speech about how much he loves his wife. Harmony is holding my hand, showing off our relationship again to anyone who might look our way. Aaron is across from us staring out into the distance, not caring about any word his dad is saying. My stomach twists and turns as my legs begin to bounce faster. With everyone second that goes by brings on another feeling or thought that i'm just not ready for.
Harmony's blonde hair is flowing down her back, her plump lips are shining with a gloss she knows I love, her blue eyes are glimmering, but her insides are rotten. Just looking her leaves a disgusting taste in my mouth. I pull my hand away from hers as I pretend to fix up something on my collar, her smile falters at the sudden disappearance. She turns to me and I swear I see red flash in her eyes. I act like I don't notice her hand waiting for mine to return. After today no part of me will be returning to her.
"You okay?" Harmony asks when the speech ends. "Something feels wrong".
"Everything is fine" I give her a fake smile as I lie.
"If you say so" her eyes go wide for a moment, something i've noticed her do in the past when she doesn't believe me. "Hey, where were you last night?"
"Oh I was out at the park running for a bit. Just went right to sleep when I got home" I don't bother making eye contact with her. Despite everything that has happened, I still need to accept that Harmony does know me. She knows when i'm lying, she can tell when i'm upset about something. I need to be careful.
"That's odd" Harmony frowns.
"What?" I turn to her.
"Nothing" she shrugs.
When we finally get to leave I instantly notice the tension in the car. Neither of us speak, the radio just plays some random songs with some static breaking them up every once and a while. A thousand scenarios run through my brain. I want this to all go well, I don't want to actually hurt her. I never wanted to hurt anyone.
"My parents aren't home" Harmony smirks as we walk into her house together. The moment the door is shut Harmony is pressing herself against me, her lips pressed to mine before I get the chance to even kick my shoes off.
"Harms" I groan as I attempt to push her away, "stop, please".
"What?" she pulls away from me, shocked. "What is going on? Did something happen while we were out?"
"No- no" I shake my head, running my hand through my hair. "Can we just go up to your room, please?"
I don't let her respond before I begin to make my way up the stairs. I enter her room to find it's the cleanest it's ever been. Different movies and CDs are spread out on her bed, her mini fridge is stocked with all of my favourite drinks and foods, there are even candles on her bedside table. I begin to feel very overwhelmed with everything happening. How could I break up with her now? She's set all of this up for me.
"Surprise" sarcasm is laced through her voice as she enters the room. "I wanted this weekend to be special, but I don't think anything could ever be special between us".
"Harmony" I pause. "I-I'm so sorry" I cringe at myself for doing this to her.
"No" she huffs. "Don't be. Just please be honest with me now, Nick. Tell me what on Earth is going on with you!" her arms fly around as she speaks. She's growing impatient, and that is something I didn't want to happen. We both sit down on her bed and I take a deep breath before I begin to speak.
"I'm only giving you this one chance to tell me the truth" I hesitate before grabbing her hand. "Okay?"
"Truth about what?" when I don't instantly reply she continues, "Nick, you're scaring me. What's going on?"
