Holiday stood with a blush on her cheeks and some mittens adorning her hands. She also wore an old hat, one of those ones with big puffy balls on top of it. She hadn’t wanted to because she thought she would look stupid in front of her girlfriend but her brother, ever the worrier, forced it atop her head.

Holiday looked down at her watch once again. 1:14 PM. She had been standing there for twenty minutes waiting for her girlfriend to get there. They were supposed to meet outside the diner at 1:00 but of course Holiday had gotten there five minutes early with some chocolates and a teddy bear in hand, ready to give to her girlfriend.

The sad part was that her girlfriend wasn’t there to receive the gifts right then. Holiday looked down at her watch again to see that another five minutes had passed of her waiting. She wondered where she was. Sure, Merica was late sometimes like any other human being. But, she was always there within five minutes with a reasonable explanation and an apology on her tongue.

Holiday was always fine with it because it was never during anything important and she always had her reasons that she wasn’t afraid of sharing with her. But this was longer than any other time and Holiday knew that she should feel angry at the moment. But she wanted to believe Merica wouldn’t do that on purpose. She always assumed the worst of people and this was the one time that she wanted to be able to think that someone was good, like genuinely good.

Instead of being mad though, Holiday was incredibly worried. Merica sometimes rode around on her bike. What if a car had hit her and she died? What if her pregnant cousin went into labor and died? What if there was a drive by and she died? What if something fell from the sky and she died? What if her parents had died? Oh wow, a lot of these theories had to do with death. Although, considering who her brother was, could you blame her for worrying so much about death?

Finally after a whopping forty five minutes of waiting and hoping, Holiday decided that it was worthless. It was obvious that she wasn’t going to show up and she tried to convince herself that she wasn’t disappointed at all. Holiday was one hundred percent sure that her girlfriend probably had some reasonable excuse as to why she hadn’t been able to come to the diner on time and Holiday was also sure that once she heard why Merica hadn’t been there that she would feel so utterly stupid for not thinking of that. There had to be a reason and she knew it was a good one.

Holiday decided that the best course of action would be to bike her way ten minutes over to Merica’s house to see why the older girl hadn’t been there when she was almost always there without a doubt. So she untied her bike and hopped on it, riding away into the oncoming wind with a mission in mind.

She knew that it really wasn’t that serious, after all it was just one little inconsequential date, it really didn’t mean anything. But, she guessed that maybe she had gotten so used to being able to really count on her girlfriend to be one of the most reliable people in her life, so now she felt like this was actual betrayal. It wasn’t though, she reminded herself, it was probably nothing. Nothing at all.

Holiday showed up at the small house where her girlfriend lived and stared at the teal door for just a couple of seconds before walking around to the back of the house where a medium sized window lay. Usually she would just suck it up and go through the front door, dealing with Merica’s parents for a couple of minutes, but she did not have the energy to put up with them for any amount of time that day.

She knew that no matter what she was welcome to climb in her window at any point, whether the other girl was home or not. It was something that they had both agreed upon after  one too many times of no one being at the Anders residence when Merica fought with her parents or something and needed a place to go to for a little while. So now they were both allowed to sneak in each other’s windows at any point.

Holiday’s parents were fine with it, but they preferred that if someone was home that either of them use the front door. However, the entire Anders family had gotten used to Merica’s presence in the house and at breakfasts very quickly. She had already been doing it when she was friends with Cyrus, now it was just a lot more. Like it used to be a couple of times a month and now it is a couple of times a week.

When she finally crawled fully through the window she saw her girlfriend sitting on her bed with her earbuds in and her hands working dutifully with some charcoal on a large piece of paper. Under normal circumstances, this would be her favorite way to find her. Sitting down and relaxing while doing something she genuinely enjoyed, it was great. But not today. No, no, not today.

Holiday went over to the girl, sitting on the bed as she went, and tapped on one of her earbuds to get her attention. The blonde girl took them out of her ears while looking up to see who was there. When her eyes landed on Holiday her face lit up with her smile stretching across her face until she realized that Holiday wasn’t also smiling. Which was weird, her girlfriend was always happy when she visited her.

“What’s wrong?” Merica asked with a worried look in her eyes.

“Where were you?” Holiday asked, her face scrunching up with her emotions.

“What do you mean?” Merica questioned her.

“The diner, we were supposed to meet an hour ago.” Holiday answered the other girl.

“Oh shit. I totally forgot. I’m so sorry, do you want to do something else?” Merica asked.

Holiday felt tears well up in her eyes but she tried desperately to blink them back. She didn’t even know why this felt like such a big deal to her when it really wasn’t important. She knew it was because this was the first time that she realized that she couldn’t always rely on the older girl.

“We could watch a movie here or something. Wait, hey, don’t cry.” Holiday realized in that moment that she had let some of her tears go. Merica reached her hand up to swipe them away, but Holiday stood up before she could reach her cheek.

“I’m gonna head home.” And she snuck out the window.
