Monica Medina
Monica tapped her fingers in time with the rhythm of the song playing on the radio. She glanced over at the calendar in the backseat, ‘April 27th 1999’. The last year before everything went to shit, or so some people said. ‘Las personas locas’, she thought to herself quietly, ‘pendejos’.
She heard a deep chuckle emerge from the seat beside her, and she whipped her head around to look at James opposite her, sitting in the driver's seat. With the car parked, he just sat there looking at her with a look of admiration and amusement in his eyes. A beer bottle was placed between his lips that quirked up awkwardly in a half grin around the cap as he took another swig.
“¿Como?” She asked with a playful expression, only to be met with the same deep voice saying, “Nada.” She glared playfully to try and elicit a better response out of the man in front of her, only to be met with a minute and a half long staring contest before getting any more of an answer.
“Tienes esta lucia en tu cara. Mucho serio y…molesta, supongo que. ¿Como en tu mente?” He explained softly, a caring look in his eyes.
“Tontos.” She said simply. “¿Como? ¿Quiénes son tontos?” He asked her, confused. “Todos de personas que creen que el mundo va a irse a final.” She replied with an even more annoyed look on her face.
“¡Estar atento mundo, Monica de ciencia es venidera!” James exclaimed with fervor that he would only have while tipsy. “Callate.” She murmured before turning back to the view in front of her.
The sun was setting down after its long day of hard work for her side of the world, still leaving behind its golden aura in its wake. Just enough to leave her wondering if it was really going away for the night, or if it would stay behind for an extra hour or two because it had seen her and James. Her and her tall lover, perhaps it would choose to accommodate them just this once.
She knew realistically that that wouldn’t be happening. She was studying in college for a degree in science and medicine. Of course, she was well aware that celestial beings wouldn’t stop for a sweet moment. No matter what the romantics write about in stories, that still wasn’t reality. Unfortunately.
“Es bella. Casi como bella lo que tu, mi vida.” He smiled at her with a cheesy, love-stricken look in his eyes.
She rolled her eyes and hit his arm lightly. Though the action only caused another happy little giggle to erupt from the twenty year old beside her. He had always been like that when he was drunk. Monica herself wasn’t unused to pull back the hair of her sick friends or hold them as they cried. Some were sad drunks, some crazy, some happy. But James, he was the flirtiest drunk she had ever seen.
Suddenly, he reached towards the dial on the radio and turned it up far too high to have been reasonable. If they weren’t at such a secluded place near the forest, then she would’ve been worried that someone would’ve called the police on them. Instead, she just laughed, immediately recognizing the song.
James exclaimed, practically bouncing in his seat with happiness from the sound.
“¡Tú dices esto de todos canciones!” She had to speak louder to be heard over the music, no doubt damaging the radio at that very minute.
