A more in depth anylisis on why I chose 'Soap' by Melanie Martinez for Birdy.
Verse 1:
Think I just remembered somthing / I think I left the faucet running / Now my words are filling up the tub / Darling, you're just soaking in it / But I know you'll get out the minute / You notice all your fingers pruning upI think that the first verse matches Birdy because she was a bit of a cautionary in the show. One example is when the group first arrived at Thorton Rust, and she thought she saw Delphine in the mirror, but everyone ignored her and said she was being childish. I feel like that ran true throughout the show, but she didn't really act on her instincts. She just went along with everyone telling her that she was wrong.
Pre-Chorus:
I'm tirid of being careful, tiptoe / Trying to keep the water warm / Let me under your skin / Uh-oh / There it goes / I said too much / It overflowed / Why do I always spill?I feel like this part matches her because she was younger and kinda always had a tendency to share things with others. But then it was thrust on her about all of these family secrets, and it was admitidly a bit hard for her to keep everything to herself. She really had a lot of pressure on her to keep all of the families secrets. And of course, everyone had that issue of having to keep their secrets, but I feel like everyone dealt with it differently, and it was especially hard for Birdy.
Chorus:
I feel it coming out my throat / Guess I better wash my mouth out with soap / God, I wish I never spoke / I feel it coming out my throat / Guess I better wash my mouth out with soap / God, I wish I never spoke / Now I gotta wash my mouth out with soapI feel like this section matches Birdy also because of the family secrets. One specific incident I wanna talk about was the gas station scene, during her and Brynleighs birthdays. Her and Brynleigh had gone into the gas station to get something, and a police officer noticed Birdy crying and went over to them to ask questions. It became a bit of a commotion with the officer question Monica and James and all that. There were a couple of other similar instances. But overall, with Birdy's talkative nature, she is constantly told to stop talking or that she's sharing too many details. Which I do understand is worrying from the other characters' points of view, but still.
Verse 2:
Think I got myslef in trouble / So I'll fill the bath with bubbles / Then I'll put the towels all away / Should've never said the word "love" / Threw a toaster in the bathtub / I'm sick of all the games I have to playVerse 2 explains another aspect of Birdy's character. That would be her being a child. Yes, many of the characters are children, but she canoically a bit younger than all the other characters and is not usually given as much information. This can make it a bit hard for her to understand some of the situations fully.
Okay, I know this was kinda ridiculous, but who cares? I'll probably try to do these types of analyses on the other songs I've chosen for characters.
