Merica Nguyen

Merica looked solemnly up at the large pieces of paper that she had just strung up in the corner of her room. They were in her usual swift black and white art style but had a muse that she didn’t usually put up. Most of her drawings that included animals were some type of fantastical creature: like dragons or mermaids. But this one was fish, just fish.

Well, they weren’t just fish to her. Her friend Holiday had mentioned that her little sister, Birdy, was interested in mermaids, which led to a fascination in marine life in general. Merica had decided to make the portrait for her but she wasn’t ever sure how to tell Holiday, or her other friend Cyrus: Holiday’s older brother, to give it to the younger girl.

Merica sighed, this was probably at least the fifth attempt that she had made to find some random excuse to talk to Holiday and backed out because she was scared or ‘didn’t know what to say’. How was she ever supposed to tell the other girl how she felt about her if she never even worked up the courage to have a conversation with her in the first place.

Possibly the most frustrating part about the situation was that she used to be able to go over to the Anders house and sit down with Cyrus and Holiday and just be fine talking for hours on end with them. She had only begun having difficulty about a month ago when she finally had the realization smacked in her face that she had romantic feelings for the girl.

She cursed her teacher for ever saying, ‘Make sure to get me the wedding invite’ after catching her blushing while Holiday walked away. This was all her PE teacher’s fault for pointing her, maybe, very obvious feelings towards her best friend’s younger sister.

She huffed in frustration with herself before looking down at her phone to see Holiday’s Instagram in full view on the screen. It was her most recent post, her and her other friends walking around in town fully bundled with an array of hats and scarves and coats all smiling happily at the camera. Merica frowned before trying to find a good side to this situation, at least Holiday didn’t seem affected by her sudden disappearance from social outings.

The post was from a couple of hours ago and now it was darkish in the early hours of the night. Merica sighed and shuffled over to her bed where she dramatically flopped down in a way that hurt her stomach. She quickly switched her position into a one where she held her stomach and cursed herself from five seconds ago for jumping onto the bed like that.

She groaned as she pulled a blanket over her head, not even caring that she was in her outside clothes at that point. She had, at the very least, taken her shoes off at the door of her home. Mostly because she was genuinely convinced that her mother might kill her if she tracked dirt into the home. But other than that, she was still in her loose jeans and checkered shirt with a turtleneck underneath. Nonetheless, she still laid down and curled in on herself in self-pity.

Merica stilled significantly and her breathing stopped all of a sudden when she heard her window creak open and the sound of someone climbing inside. A familiar voice muttered ‘maldita sea’ when there was a thunk, most likely that person falling to the ground. But she knew that voice. Merica threw the blanket off of herself to see no one there, but when she leaned over the bed she realized that they were just on the ground, out of sight.

Holiday Anders sat there in all her glory, wrapped up in multiple layers of coats, scarves, and the such in an attempt to bite back the Alaskan cold that they were used to at that point. Her struggle seemed to be where her foot was still stuck in the window that had partially closed. Merica sighed and stood up, walking around the bed to open the window a bit so as to let the other girl snatch her foot back before she promptly slammed it shut against the winds.

“Hey!” Holiday looked up at her with a smile on her face while she quickly jumped up off of the ground. “Thanks for the help there.” She finally stood at her full height, just a centimeter taller than Merica, and continued to beam at her.

The older girl stiffened when she realized how close the two of them were. She could feel Holiday’s cold breath of her cheek as she stared directly into her eyes, before her attention was caught by something else.

“Woah…these are awesome.” Holiday pushed past her a bit to see the pictures of fish swimming around in the corner of her room. Yes, okay, this was her chance. She couldn’t mess this up.

“Thanks, I made them for Birdy. If you wanna take them to her.” She rubbed her hands on her pants with worry that those words had seemed unnecessary in the grand scheme of the conversation, but her worries turned out to be for nothing after all.

“Can I? Birdy would absolutely love to add these to her collection of things about the sea.” Merica’s heart jumped at her offer of art being accepted and she eagerly nodded her head and offered yet another smile to the older girl. “Yeah, totally, take any of them that you want.” She cringed in her mind at her overeagerness.

Holiday carefully reached up and pulled one down, one that included three fish with tons of spots on them swimming around in a circular vortex. Merica smiled at her choice, that had been one of the ones that she had spent the longest time working on, an hour and a half in total.

The other girl turned around happily with her selection. “Thanks, I’m sure Birdy will love it.” Then Holiday did the unexpected and leaned to press a soft kiss to Merica’s cheeks, causing a bright blush to encompass her entire face. Holiday then promptly headed over to the window and climbed out. She shouted one last ‘bye’ to the other girl before running away to hide her own blush.

(Hope you enjoyed! Bye!)
