*Third Person POV*
Birdy Anders pulled her hood on and grabbed her bag. She looked one last time at the photo on her nightstand. It was a photo of her and her family, all standing next to a frozen lake. She had loved those times, and she almost cried, remembering it. But she wiped her nose and prepared for what would happen tonight. This would rip her family apart. She knew it. Birdy Anders was terrified.
The doorbell rang, and it reverberated around the household. They were here. Birdy pulled out the cursed box and walked down the stairs as quiet as a mouse. She arrived downstairs just when her mother opened the door to let them inside. She gulped as one of them immediately went to Cyrus, the other to James. The Pasternacks were here.
Brynleigh, along with Adam, had scheduled a family game night. Pasternacks and Anders edition (with special guest Casey Dupree). Uno was insisted upon to be the game that they play. That scared Birdy even more. If you thought Brynleigh was competitive, you should see Monica on family game night. At least they had Jarritos. That was an upside, right. This was going to be a long night.

Birdy slowly sat down next to Mr. Pasternack. They didn’t have enough cards, so they would be playing with partners. Brynleigh had already sat next to Cyrus before, and most of them were even at the table. Holiday had, of course, taken Adam under wing for this. Monica and Casey grabbed drinks and sat together. Mr. Pasternack had tried to be partners with her dad, but Badger grabbed James’s arm and glared at Mr. Pasternack. Clearly signaling it was a no-go there. So that left Birdy and Mr. Pasternack sitting together on the bench, clearly not wanting to be each other’s partners. But, alas, what are you supposed to do when your friend abandons you to be pals with your dad?
When Birdy got her deck, she immediately knew it was going to be fun. Three ‘+4’ cards, two ‘+2’ cards, and a red 7. James and Badger went first, laying down a blue 8. Then Adam and Holiday with a blue 2. Brynleigh and Cyrus put down a red 2. Which led to Birdy and Mr. Pasternack putting down their red 7. Monica and Casey’s turn, they put down a red reverse. Oh no, they didn’t have a choice. They had to point down a draw card. Birdy didn’t want to have to face Brynleigh wrath and looking up at Mr. Pasternack, she knew he didn’t want to either.
Slowly, Mr. Pasternack pulled out a red ‘+2’, but Birdy stopped him. She took the card out of his hand and put it back in the deck. Birdy gathered her courage and shakily pointed at one of the ‘+4’s that they had. Pasternack shook his head, but in his eyes, you could tell he knew what had to be done. Solemnly, he took the ‘+4’, laying it on the table. Watching as Brynleigh’s nostrils flared and Cyrus sighed, almost in slow motion, it seemed. Birdy took the last sip of her Jarritos and braced herself.
In a surprising turn of events, Brynleigh simply took a deep breath and grabbed four cards from the pile. Birdy would say this relieved her, but she knew this only meant Brynleigh had a plan of revenge. Especially when she saw Cyrus mouth ‘no’ at Brynleigh, then turning to give Birdy an apologetic look. But Birdy simply put her hands up, knowing that what was to happen to her was not his fault. After all, Uno was made to break families, friendships, and relationships. No one was safe from its consequences. She would not blame her brother for this.
Pasternack and Birdy found out Brynleigh's plan when Badger laid down another reverse. He looked far too amused for the situation. Of course, he would find their inevitable suffering hilarious. He was not cruel in many ways, but this was one of the ways he was. Brynleigh smirked when he did that. She knew what she was to do. Again, Cyrus looked apologetically towards his little sister, and again, Birdy told her older brother with a single look that she would not blame him.
Throughout the rest of the game's duration, Brynleigh hammered her father and Birdy with every draw card imaginable, changing colors to ones she didn't have, causing chaos to ensure they suffered.
By the end of the game Birdy and Pasternack had a total of sixty two, Cyrus had fallen asleep with his head on Brynleigh shoulder, everyone had had multiple Jarritos, and Brynleigh had once again come out a victor of the game. Everyone went home or to their rooms and slept for hours without interruption. All tired from the draining evening. They didn’t have a family game night for a little while after that.
