another boring day at gym class. another period y/n wished would end, so she could go back home.
'which idiot thought of putting gym class last?'
she sighed, giving the ball to one of her friends before she walked towards the plastic seats of the gymnasium.
she, instead, sat on the polished wooden floor- bringing her knees closer to her chest. she sighed, feeling her heart heavy in her ribcage.
it was just another day where she felt like shit. school was draining her, and it was only the start of her last grade in highschool.
she turned her head to the side, watching the boys play basketball near the exit door. some girls were sitting on the plastic chairs, scrolling through instagram or filming on tiktok, while some others were playing volleyball in the middle of the gymnasium.
she noticed that her teacher; mr. hannes, was nowhere to be seen. well, of course, this was no news. he was hardly present in his class.
she sighed, before she focused in front of her. her friends were still playing volleyball close to the bleachers, looking annoyed by their classmate who couldn't stop screaming when the ball was hit a little too hard.
lastly, her eyes fell on jean who was playing basketball all by himself. anytime the ball would come close to her, she'd pass it to him- the fake smile never leaving her face.
she wanted to place her hands on top of her ears and shut out all the noises; from the bouncing balls, the screams and the chatter of her classmates.
she could feel tears attack her eyes, and she had to stop them from rolling down her cheeks. she hated the feeling in her chest; the feeling of loneliness and depression. it always hit her at random times like this.
she placed that smile on her face, when she noticed jean coming closer to her. the ball he was playing with had bounced away and it was sitting at the nearby corner.
"are you okay?" he asked her, once he kneeled next to her.
"i am"
"i don't think i believe that" he said, a small chuckle leaving his lips.
she looked at him for a second, before looking straight ahead.
"it's just... i don't really know how to explain it" she sighed.
"a random feeling of depression?"
"exactly!" she said, turning her head to look at him.
"i get those, too. one second feeling just fine, and then everything is miserable. for no reason at all!"
she rested her chin on her knees, while she listened to him. she didn't want to talk, since there was that lump in her throat. preventing her to talk, because if she did, she knew her voice would break and she'd end up crying.
"you don't want to talk about it and i get it! if you need anything, i'll be right there; playing" he said, patting her shoulder as he got up.
he took the basketball and turned to look at her.
"i'm gonna score this one for you. hope it'll make you smile"
when he did, he looked at her with a smile, which brought one to her own lips, too. once he turned around, she focused on her fast beating heart and the small butterflies that fluttered in her stomach.
'he understood! someone finally understood!'
