WARNING: GRIEF AND MENTIONS OF SUICIDE
I couldn't believe it. Pie was gone. I never saw this coming. Pie was always the tough cookie I had always had in my life. She made the days of high school bearable. She would always protect others and didn't take shit from anyone. She was one of the coolest people I had ever met. I was in dismay when the doctor said those six words.
Everyone around was now crying, including myself. The doctor opened the door and let us into the room. We saw Pie's unconscious body lying on the hospital bed. We saw her wrists soaked in dried blood. Pillow did nothing but just stare at Pie's dead body. She was almost expressionless. I glanced over at her and she just... stared. It was like something in her brain turned off and she was in a state of shock she couldn't escape.
The doctor came by our sides and told us everything.
"I'm so sorry for your guys' loss. We did everything we could to save her. I think it would be best for me to leave you guys alone for now."
"Thanks, doctor. You did your best," I smiled with a tear in my eye.
We continued to stay in the room for about fifteen minutes until the doctor ushered us out of the room. Everyone but Liy left the room. Remote stayed outside. We heard Liy mumbling something towards Pie. I put my ear to the door to listen to what Liy was saying.
"Pie, I'm so sorry for everything. This was all my fault. I allowed this to happen. I was the reason you did what you did. I hope you're resting well in your new place. I always loved you like a sister. You're one of the coolest, nicest people I have ever met. We've had our disagreements from time to time, but I never lost my respect for you. I have always thought you were one of the best people I have ever met in my life. Rest easy, Pie." Liy mumbled.
Liy left the room, her face soaked in tears. Remote comforted her and wiped her tears with a sleeve. Lightning also cried a little. I felt bad for him. He had just joined our friend group and this was one of the first things he had witnessed while being part of the group.
We all left the hospital with tears in our eyes. I saw Bottle pull something out of her pocket.
I put my arm around her. "What's that" I curiously asked with a slightly saddened tone.
"It's the last thing we can remember Pie by. Her favorite lighter," Bottle continued to sniffle.
"I see."
Pie's lighter was one of the core things we had of her. Since her lighter was refillable, she had been using it since we had met in high school. There were her initials carved onto the lighter's handle and when you lit the flame, the flame would turn pink. We could see the burn marks and the wear and tear, but it was still very worth having.
Bottle showed the lighter to everyone and we all examined her prized possession.
"Should we put this on Pie's grave during her funeral?"
All of us nodded.
Tree and I got on our bikes and went home. The ride back was dark, but our bikes had nightlights on so we could see in the dark. The ride back was eerie. We both missed Pie already. Pillow had told us in a text that she would plan the burial for Pie and that we should bury her in her backyard. Tree seemed visibly upset by everything and he seemed affected by this entire ordeal. What had this thing done to us?
We arrived back at home and parked our bikes. Tree and I walked inside the house and we were both dead silent.
Both of us sat on the couch and started watching TV. I decided to start a conversation, even though I figured it wouldn't be the best time to judging by the recent events.
