tom riddle hates people. he hates interacting with them, being in class with them, group projects with them. except darlene habitt. she was the one person who he didn't mind being around. darlene never talked more than she needed to, unless she was around tom, always got her work done or asked only tom for help, the professors all loved her. potter and malfoy were sworn enemies, which made tom laugh because her and draco were in the same house. regulus adored darlene, as did mattheo and theodore.

"alright there, doll?" tom asked as he walked into the library to see her frustrated.

"i'm fine, tom." she sighed.

"potions?" riddle guessed.

"just the draught of living death. having a little trouble, but i'll figure it out." darlene smiled.

tom looked over her shoulder. he noticed that she was missing a very important ingredient. darlene didn't mind him looking, he did that all the time. riddle pointed out that she was missing something and she threw her head on the desk. tom had a ghost of a smile dust across his face. she was adorable, to him, when she got frustrated. darlene thanked the boy and hurried back to the classroom to grab what she needed.

"darling? you left something back there." he held up a beautiful black necklace.

"that's not mine, tommy, i don't own jewelry." darlene shook her head.

"take it, please?" his eyes were full of something that darlene couldn't quite place.

habitt smiled and took the necklace. she gestured for him to help her put it on, which he did. she admired how it looked, loving every detail of it. tom didn't think she could get more beautiful. darlene knew not to hug him in public, so she gave him her signature look that let him know she was grateful for him. tom winked at her before walking away.

she gathered her remaining ingredients and left back to her dorm. there was a note on her bed. it was from tom and mattheo. they sent her flowers - black roses to be exact. those were her favorite. only tom knew that. the box next to the flowers contained the most gorgeous black ballgown dress that darlene had ever seen. the note was tom asking her to the yule ball.

darlene texted him that she'd love to go with him. she also sent a picture of her in the dress, but he didn't see it. tom handed his phone to mattheo and had him delete the photo. darlene blushed at the text that told her how he wanted to wait until the night of the ball to see her in the dress.

after a few more hours of her brewing her potion, she was finally done. darlene called tom in to see her potion. he smiled at the girl and congratulated her on getting it right. she asked if she could hug him, and he nodded. darlene immediately ran into his arms, thanking the boy, then letting go. she knew his hugs didn't last that long and she didn't want to make him uncomfortable or upset with her.

"why'd you let go so soon, doll?" tom cocked an eyebrow.

"you don't like hugs, especially long ones. i didn't want to make you uncomfortable." darlene smiled as she went back to her desk.

tom's heart both swelled and broke at her words. he knew she loved hugs and she knew he didn't. darlene noticed everything about him, just as he did with her. while she taking more notes on her potion, tom pulled her up from the chair and guided her over to the bed. he sat first, then pulled the girl into his lap. she wrapped her arms around his neck and hid her face in his shoulder. tom, for the first time in his life, felt relaxed and comfortable.

"don't leave." tom whispered.

"wouldn't dream of it, tommy." darlene smiled.

"good. you're mine now. i'm never letting you go." riddle kissed the top of her head.

"i'm yours, riddle, only yours." she mumbled, falling asleep in his arms.

darlene's soft snores let him know that she was finally asleep. tom couldn't describe the feelings he had for the girl. normally, if someone got that close to him, he simply kill them. people were weaknesses. darlene, on the other hand, wasn't a weakness. she only made him feel stronger, better, more motivated towards his goals. he asked mattheo what it was and he said it's love. tom had never felt love before.

she slept for a few hours until she had been woken up by a loud alarm blaring. tom was nowhere to be found. she went down to the common room and saw the boy reading by the fire. darlene called out to him. he turned to face her, revealing to her the black eye he'd recently got. she hurried over to see how bad it as. tom explained that someone had said something not so nice about her, and they were taken care of.

"before you ask, no i didn't kill him." tom rolled his eyes.

"tommy, you know i don't care if it's for good reason." darlene used a spell to heal his eye.

"yea?" he pulled her back into his lap.

"mhm." she closed the gap between them, kissing the lips she'd so longed to taste.

"don't start something you can't finish, doll." tom warned.

"who said i can't finish what i start?" darlene challenged, getting up and swaying her hips as she walked away.

"oh, you are going to be the death of me, aren't you?" the boy called after her, getting up and following her wherever she went.

"depends. you want me to be?" habitt giggled.

"definitely." he confirmed, pushing her into his room and pinning her against the door once it was closed.
