lorenzo berkshire always had his little black book with him. he never went anywhere without it. his friends always tried to snatch it from him, desperate to know what the hell the boy was writing about in there. they never succeeded in their attempts though.

one morning in the great hall, lorenzo was writing in the book when a girl ask if she could sit next to him. berkshire just nodded, not looking up from the notebook. mattheo, draco, theodore, tom, and regulus greeted the girl before lorenzo. they all thought she was way cuter than him.

"what's your name, pretty girl?" mattheo asked.

"poppy." she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

lorenzo's head snapped up at the mention of her name. poppy looked over at him and smiled. he knew a poppy when they were kids, but she moved away with her aunt and uncle before school started. they never saw each other after that. poppy sent berkshire letters, but he never replied. or so she thought.

"poppy? as in poppy miller?" lorenzo closed the notebook.

"yes." she nodded.

"do you guys know each other or something?" draco looked between the two of them.

"we did before my aunt and uncle made me move away. i tried to write him a few times, but i never heard back so i assumed he just didn't want to talk to me anymore." poppy shrugged.

lorenzo didn't say anything. the boys talked to poppy, wanting to get to know her. she would glance at berkshire from time to time, but she gave up hope years ago of anything ever happening between them. he didn't speak to her for almost five years, what would make him start back up now?

poppy bid the boys goodbye and headed to her classes for the day. mattheo and theodore stayed behind with lorenzo while the rest of the boys left. berkshire didn't even look at them. poppy didn't know the whole truth. he didn't want her to ever know. if she did, she'd hate her family more than she does now.

"what happened between the two of you?" theodore cocked an eyebrow.

"like she said." lorenzo shrugged.

"why didn't you write her back?" mattheo wondered.

"i did. every day. for four years." he whispered.

mattheo and theodore looked at each other, then back at lorenzo. if he wrote her, why didn't she know? how did she not know? who intercepted the letters? berkshire slammed his notebook shut and left the great hall. that's when it hit mattheo.

the notebook.

poppy was in the next class with mattheo and theodore. nott tried to make her laugh, riddle tried to teach her how to cast a curse. they just wanted to make the girl feel better about not hearing from lorenzo for so long. tom and draco were also in the same class. mattheo asked tom to swipe berkshire's notebook as soon as possible. tom just nodded.

it took a few days, but tom was able to grab the book. mattheo took it to poppy's room almost immediately.

"read this." mattheo tossed the book onto her bed.

"why?" she picked it up.

"because." riddle smiled, having read a little bit of it on the way to her room.

poppy cocked an eyebrow, but opened the book anyway. the first page was a journal entry from five years ago - no. it was a letter. addressed to her. she flipped through the book and saw they were all letters and they were all addressed to her. mattheo left her alone to process what she was reading. poppy left her dorm and headed to find lorenzo. thankfully, he wasn't far away. just in the common room by the fireplace.

"what is this?" poppy threw the notebook in his lap.

"how did you get this? did you read it?" he looked up at her.

"the first page. why did you never send me that?" she felt the tears prick in her eyes.

"i did. every letter in this book, i mailed to you. every day. for four years. i thought you were done with me, and that's why you never reached out." berkshire sighed as he stood.

"what? i never received anything from you." poppy tried to stop the tears from falling.

lorenzo looked at poppy, and for the first time, he saw her. the girl he fell in love with all those years ago. her golden brown hair, her beautiful blue eyes, her plump lips that he always dreamed of kissing until neither of them could breathe. poppy wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve.

"you sent me a letter every day for four years?" she still couldn't believe it.

lorenzo wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her in for a hug. she sobbed into his chest, thinking of all the letters she missed out on. the only reason for her not knowing would be her uncle and aunt intercepting them. she needed to ask them. she needed answers. poppy pulled away from the hug a lot sooner than she would have liked. the girl told lorenzo that she needed to write her family and ask what happened to the letters.

"do you want me to sit with you?" lorenzo kissed the top of her head.

"yes." she nodded.

poppy and lorenzo sat at one of the desks in the common room and started writing. she couldn't believe this was even something she needed to address. how could they have done this to her? what benefits could they have possibly thought would come with holding the letters from their niece?

dear uncle george and aunt kathleen,

i know about the letters. lorenzo berkshire, my best friend since childhood, he sent one every day for four years.

where are they? why did you hide them from me?

i want them. immediately.

your niece,

poppy.

poppy let a few tears fall as she was writing. lorenzo was right there, though, giving her the support she needed. after wrapping the letter in an envelope and giving it to an owl, poppy turned to lorenzo. she didn't know what to say - she'd been angry at him for so long over something that wasn't even his fault.

"i'm sorry." she sniffled.

"for what? you did nothing wrong." berkshire wiped a tear from her cheek.

"i blamed you for five years. i didn't even stop to think there could been a valid reason as to why you weren't writing to me." poppy fiddled with her fingers in her lap.

"poppy, it's okay. you had no inkling that something could've been wrong. i don't blame you for being angry or upset." lorenzo reassured her.

"thanks, enz." she gave a small smile.

"i'm always here for you, poppet. you know that." berkshire kissed her forehead.

"merlin, you haven't called me that since we were kids." poppy wiped her eyes with her sleeve.

lorenzo smiled and pulled the girl closer. she giggled and looked into his eyes. he still had the most beautiful brown eyes she'd ever seen. berkshire promised to never let her think he hated her again. he swore he'd spend the rest of his life making her happy. poppy kissed his cheek to shut him up. it worked. he blushed and hid his face in the crook of her neck.

"go on a date with me?" he spun her around so she was facing him.

"anytime, anywhere, enzie." she kissed his nose and dragged him out of the common room by his wrist.
