steve knew he needed to do something.

his heat was coming up and his suppressants weren't working like they usually did. billy hargrove, the top alpha at hawkins high, always picked on male omegas. steve's suppressants usually masked his smell and made him seem like a beta, making billy leave him alone (for the most part).

nancy and robin tried to get him a different prescription, but nothing helped. he was less than twenty four hours away from his heat. walking into school that day, billy's head snapped in steve's direction almost instantly. the curly haired one could smell steve from a mile away, and boy did he smell...good?

billy shook his head, slammed his locker, and went to class. nancy and robin promised to stay by steve for as long as they could until he got back home that day. his heats always lasted a few days, and he was always excused for them. his suppressants made it so he didn't have any for a while, but his teachers knew his supply was running low. they could see the fear in his eyes.

steve hated being in heat. it hurt, he could never find the satisfaction he was desperately looking for, his friends were scared to be near him. nancy tried to help him once, but he ending up sending her into a rut that she couldn't come out of for nearly two weeks. poor jonathan never stood a chance with that one. he still wonders how they're still together sometimes, especially after that.

robin didn't know steve was an omega until a few months or so after knowing him. she could barely smell him, and even if she could, the girl just thought that's how he normally smelled. when he told her, she hugged him and told him she'd be there if he ever needed anything. nancy made sure no one ever messed with steve, not even the kids if he didn't want them to. steve was very protective over those children like no one had ever seen. if one of them even seemed a bit off, steve was the first to jump in.

he'd sniff them for injuries, check for blood, look for any sign of emotional distress. dustin, mike, eleven, and max were okay with it after a while. at first, they thought he was being a little much, but they got used to it. steve couldn't help but fuss over them. harrington really did try to stop mothering them so much, but his instincts took over fairly quickly. steve growled at nancy and robin for getting too close while he was talking to them and making sure they were okay.

he couldn't protect them in heat, though. steve had to stay away from them and that's the part that hurt him the most. even more than the incessant bullying he knew was instore for him once billy realized what he truly was. and that time came sooner than steve wanted it to. the boys had homeroom together and sat next to one another. billy chuckled under his breath once he caught another whiff of steve's scent.

"always knew you'd be one of them, harrington." billy leaned over and whispered in his ear.

"shut up, billy." steve rolled his eyes.

"oh! puppy's got a mouth on him, huh? how's about you just be a good little omega and shut up." billy smirked.

steve spit in his direction. he missed, obviously, but the intention was still there. harrington saw something shift in billy's eyes, but he couldn't quite place what it was. billy took steve's wrist and pulled him out of the classroom and into the hallway. he pinned harrington against the lockers, looking around to double check that the coast was clear. steve looked around to search for an exit, desperately trying to come up with a plan to get away from billy.

"didn't think an omega could be so rude. you really need a lesson in manners, harrington." billy's eyes were black.

as billy went to throw a punch, the sweet scent of vanilla, denim, and cinnamon hit him. steve's eyes were closed, as if he was waiting for the punch to land, but it never did. billy's grip on him tightened and the alpha started sniffing steve's neck. hargrove groaned. he didn't want to believe it, but it was right in front of him. literally.
