harper and jefferson were watching a movie in their room when there was a knock at the door. the girl got up to answer it, but jefferson held her back. his gut was telling him that something wasn't right. the hatter headed downstairs and looked through the peephole. thankfully, it was just emma. she looked a little frazzled though.

"swan? what's wrong?" jefferson asked.

"your mother is here." emma said, looking at harper who was standing on the stairs behind him.

"that's not possible. the queen of hearts is bound by the laws of wonderland. once a queen or king, they are never allowed to leave. they'll die if they try." the hatter's eyes grew wide.

"she found a rabbit hole. literally. she gave me a letter to give to harper." swan handed jefferson the letter and bid them goodnight.

jefferson shut the door and turned to his girlfriend. he gave her the letter and told her he'd leave if she wanted to read it in private. harper shook her head and opened it. she took a deep breath before reading. jefferson sat on the couch in the living room. 

it was from her mother, like swan said. the queen of hearts was furious her daughter left wonderland without so much as a goodbye. her mother threatened to find her and bring her back to their land. the queen was tired of ruling and wanted to pass the crown onto someone else. since harper is of royal blood, she could be taken to wonderland and sworn in as princess, and the queen could step down. 

harper's eyes were full of tears as she kept reading. her mother was coming for her, whether she wanted her to or not. the letter finished by saying that jefferson could come with her and they could even marry if she wished, but she would be going back to wonderland to be queen. harper dropped to her knees on the floor. jefferson was next to her almost immediately.

"what did it say, harp?" he whispered.

"she's coming for me. she's going to force me to be sworn in as princess so i can take over as queen when she steps down." harper explained.

"she can't do that. the laws are binding. there is no way for her to possibly step down unless you were to express your desire for the throne." jefferson said.

harper didn't know what to think anymore. her boyfriend was telling her one thing, while her mother was telling her another. she stepped away from him for a second, needing a moment to process what was happening. harper asked jefferson what would happen if the queen died while in storybrooke vs what would happen if she died in wonderland.

"the next in line takes over. you haven't been sworn in, so you're not next, but we don't know if you have a brother or another sibling in wonderland somewhere that they could find." the hatter explained.

"what if they're bad for wonderland? what if they start wars?" she looked at him with fear in her eyes.

"that is not your problem, harper, unless you want it to be. you don't have to take over for your mother if you don't want to." he tried to reassure her.

harper jumped at the sound of a trumpet outside. jefferson's face paled, as did his girlfriend's. that had to be the queen; no one else announced their presence with a damn trumpet. jefferson looked through the peephole once more, holding his breath.

it was her.

harper needed to get out of there. jefferson grabbed her hand and ran out the back door. he took his hat, spun it a few times, and took them to the enchanted forest. harper sat on a rock nearby and tried to calm her breathing. jefferson didn't know what to do. after a few minutes, harper stood and hugged jefferson, thanking him for getting them away from her mother.

"it was needed. we can either go back to storybrooke, or we can stay here and think of something else to do in the meantime. i'd say your mother can't come here, but she wasn't supposed to be able to come to storybrooke." jefferson held her hand as they started walking.

"isn't this where snow white and david are from? we could seek them out, if they're still here and ask them for help." harper shrugged.

"sure. their castle is over there." jefferson pointed in the direction of a huge castle with his free hand.

harper and jefferson made their way to snow's castle. the hatter knew they couldn't walk through the night and offered to make camp for them. harper collected some firewood to keep them warm, jefferson went off to find something for them to eat. he came back a few minutes later with some fish and a rabbit. harper smiled and gave him a kiss before tending to the fire again.

"you want some water, harp?" jefferson held out a water bottle.

she nodded and took a sip of the water. jefferson did the same. once they ate some of the rabbit and fish, they gathered up some sticks to make some kind of shelter for them to sleep under. jefferson didn't fall asleep right away like harper did. he stayed awake for awhile to make sure she was safe. 

"i love you, harper, and i'd never let anything happen to you." he whispered as he kissed her forehead before falling asleep himself.
