After battling Team Aqua and Team Magma, Jaden decided to return to Petalburg City to challenge Norman, at the advice of May.
Before heading to the gym, Jaden was doing some training.
Jaden: Use Iron Head! Use Leaf Blade!
Aron attacked a tree with its steel-hard head and knocked it down and so did Grovyle.
Then Grovyle used a new move. It summoned a grass knot from the ground and attacked a tree.
Jaden: Nice job, guys. Return.
Jaden returned to the Pokemon Centre and sent Aron to his house in Sinnoh and received Combusken.
Then he left the Centre and headed to the gym.
Before he knocked, the door opened.
Norman: Jaden. I've been waiting for you.
Jaden: Good. Then let's get down to business.

Norman and Jaden were at the battlefield.
Referee: The gym battle between Jaden the challenger and Norman the gym leader will begin. This will be a three-on-three battle. The battle will be over when one side's Pokemon are unable to continue. Furthermore, the challenger is allowed to make substitutions. Now, bring out your first Pokemon.
Norman: Go Exploud!
Jaden: Exploud?
Pokedex: Exploud, the Loud Noise Pokemon and the evolved form of Loudred. Exploud triggers earthquakes with the tremors it creates by bellowing. If this Pokemon violently inhales from the ports on its body, it's a sign that it's preparing to let loose a huge bellow.
Jaden: Go Grovyle!
Referee: Start the match!
Jaden: Use X-Scissor!
Grovyle attacked by crossing its forearms to create an X.
Norman: Exploud, catch it!
Exploud caught Grovyle's attack.
Jaden: What?!
Norman: Now, use Power-up Punch!
Exploud landed a close-range hit with a punch.
Exploud's attack increased.
Norman: Use Fire Punch!
Exploud attacked with a fist of fire.
Jaden: Use Grass Knot!
Grovyle tripped up Exploud with a grass knot from the ground.
Norman: Exploud no!
Jaden: Now, Leaf Blade!
Grovyle attacked with a leaf-like blade and landed a direct hit.
Norman: Exploud, use Power-up Punch on the ground!
Exploud punched the ground with lots of power and caused the ground to shake.
Grovyle lost its balance.
Norman: Now, use Stomp!
Exploud was about to stomp on Grovyle using its big foot.
Jaden: Dodge and use Leaf Blade!
Grovle dodged the attacked with a leaf-like blade.
Norman: Use Power-up Punch!
Exploud matched Grovyle's attack with a punch.
Norman: Now, Fire Punch!
Exploud was about to attack Grovyle with a fire punch.
Jaden: Quick, dodge it!
Grovyle used its quick speed to dodge the attack.
Norman: That's fast.
Jaden: Now, Crush Claw!
