what lies beneath -1

It is only an hour before dinner with Leo and his family that I remember that last week I volunteered for patrol tonight 12 - 4. I make sure I have got a movable outfit in my bracelet and text Leo to tell him this before getting dressed for dinner. we're going to what appears to be some kind of fancy restaurant so I make sure I dress nicely. 

I arrive at the place fairly quickly and feel nerves bubble up inside. I can not recall ever being this nervous to meet someone. All of my other mate's families were involved with the shadowworld or i already knew them prior to meeting my mates making it easier than this. At the minuet I only know the names of the people I am meeting. 

I take a deep breath and do a quick scan of my appearance before stepping inside. I am greeted by the maître d, a woman not too much older than myself who smiles at me warmly upon walking in. "Hi, do you have a reservation with us?" 

"I'm meeting some people under the name of Robinson." I say politely with my own matching smile. 

"The rest of your party is already here, please follow me." She says after checking over the paper in her stand. I nod and follow after her to the round booth where Leo, a boy that looks very similar to him, an older man and an older woman are sitting already. 

"Ads." Leo calls as he stands up. He walks over to me and pulls me in for a brief hug before leading me over to the table where his family are sitting. "Adelina, this is my mum, Mary, my dad, Cole and my older brother Ashley." 

"I told you to stop calling me that." Ashley says annoyed to Leo before turning to face me. "You can call me Ash." I nod as I sit down at the table. "so how much is he paying you to pretend to be his girlfriend then?" 

"What?" I ask shocked. 

"Ashley." His mother scolds him but he continues unfazed. 

"There is no way my brother could land himself a girl as hot as you. and from how he described his girlfriend she most defiantly is made up." 

"Are you insinuating something about me. Or saying that something is wrong with Leo because if that is the case then I think it's best we both go." I say annoyed. 

"no, no he's not." Mary says politely placing her hand over mine. "Leo's just never had a girlfriend before and Ash likes to put his brother down, just ignore him." At this I pause before turning to Leo. 

"You've never had a girlfriend before?" I ask surprised. 

"Well, I ugh, no." At this I smile and kiss his cheek. 

I decide to check over the menu and decide what I want to eat before changing the conversation. "I am so glad to finally meet you all. Leo's so amazing I was just couldn't wait to meet the amazing people who raised him." 

"We are happy to meet you too dear." Cole says with a smile. "And we can't wait to meet your family as well." At this my smile drops and I feel tears rush to my eyes. 

"dad." Leo hisses from beside me. 

"What?" He asks back confused. 

"It's just that my mother passed away less than two months ago and both my father and twin brother passed away last week so, the only family I have is my sister Clary." 

"Oh, we are so sorry dear." 

"It's okay, Jonathan and I were separated when we were very young when my parents split and I only really met him recently anyway." I say lightly. "And my father wasn't a very good person so it was best he wasn't there most of my life." I follow on. 

We stay in silence for a moment as the tension rises, only to be cut by the waiter arriving at the table. "Are you guys all ready to order?" He asks and I smile before recalling what I wanted to eat and drink with everyone else following on afterwards. 

"So how did you two meet?" Mary asks us. 

"Mutual friends." I respond. They all nod and accept that as a sufficient answer. We continue with small talk throughout most of dinner until Leo brings up a deeper topic just as dessert is being served. 

"So, would now be a good time to tell you that I am moving out." This causes his mother to choke on her drink. 

"What?" She asks surprised. 

"I recently brought a house as I wanted all the people I love to be able to stay under one roof." I say sheepishly. 

"All the people you love?" Mary asks confused and I blink realizing I slipped up and turn slightly to face Leo who takes my hand. 

"Adelina is a follower of polyamory." He explains for me. "I know this and know each of the other men she is with as we all plan to live under the same roof together." 

"oh my god, my son is dating a cult leader." Mary cries out shocking both me and Leo.

"What, no I'm not a-" 

"Well then you're a whore." 

"How dare you." Leo says from beside me, all the while Ash is doubled over in laughter. "Adelina is not a whore and I refuse to allow you treat her this way. Polyamory is a lifestyle choice that she has chosen and I accept that, you cannot always control who you love. And after what happened two years ago you both have no right to judge. Come on, let's go." Leo says as he stands from the table and holds his hand out for mine. 

"No Leo wait. You're right, Adelina I am sorry. I judged you on something I have no right to. You obviously make my son happy and the fact that you still have so much love for others after what you have been through while still so young amazes me. I would be glad to call you family." 

"And I." Cole follows on. 

"Thankyou both. It really means a lot to me. I will be honest with you, I could not imagine my life without Leo or any of my other partners, they are honestly everything to me. I'm not trying to take your son away from you or make him think that he is not enough for me alone because he is. I just know that without all of them, I wouldn't be who I am now and I just want to be able to share one roof with them and your son, which is why I spent a large amount of my savings to buy a home for all of us and I hope you can accept that." 

They all just look at me silently. "Now dinner has been absolutely wonderful but I do have to get home. I loved meeting you all and I hope we can do this again sometime." 

"Of course darling." Mary says before standing and hugging me. I just smile at Cole and Ash before placing a kiss to Leo's cheek. I then take out some money and leave it on the table for dinner and quickly walk out before they have the chance to refuse.
