yn felt a little crazy. there was this girl at school who she noticed probably for the first time since joining nekoma (nothing unusual, she wasn't paying attention to every single student at her school), and she appeared to be trying to approach her all day.
she first noticed her in the bathroom, before classes began. she walked out of the cabin and saw the girl standing near the sinks, staring at her. the girl opened her mouth in her direction, then quickly left the bathroom.
the second time, after the first period, yn noticed the girl peeking into her classroom, but as soon as their gazes met, she walked away.
after that, yn knew something was up.
the third time was during lunch break, yn was walking back to class after buying a drink from the vending machine, and this girl was going straight to her, because she looked behind her and no one was looking back at her, so she had to be walking to her, but then kuroo approached her with a big smile, and the girl vanished somewhere.
"i feel a little insane today," yn admitted, looking up at him.
"woah," kuroo chuckled at her greeting. "why?" he asked, walking alongside her to her classroom.
"i saw the same girl trying to say something to me, i guess, three times today, and everytime she gets close she's disappearing god know why," she said huffed. one thing about yn was that she hated not knowing.
"that's weird, do you see her now?" he asked and looked at yn, who checked every corner of the hallway with her eyes.
"nope." she said, shaking her head. "you're not going to cafeteria?"
"i don't know, depends on where you are going," he said, nagging her with his elbow.
yn pulled her lips into a straight line, trying to keep from the smiles that were threatening to show up on her face.
"i was going to spend my lunch break in classroom."
"classroom, it is," he said, nodding. "what?" he asked, as yn gave him a suspicious look.
"do you want something from me?"
"yeah, some time together."
yn squinted her eyes, studying kuroo's expression to see if there was any ulterior motive in his face. he seemed genuine, which sparked some warm feelings in yn's chest.
"okay," she agreed, entering the classroom.
kuroo pulled a free chair to the other side of her desk and sat in front of her. their knees were touching slightly under the desk, but none of them moved back to make more space. he placed his bag on top of his lap to look through the contents. yn opened her lemonade and made an effort to do something other than stare at kuroo.
"here, for you," he said, sliding a pack of something towards her.
"dorayaki?" yn asked, as if the big name of the brand that only sold dorayaki wasn't obvious enough.
"mhm," he said, smiling at her.
"thank you," she said, slowly taking the snack.
"you don't like dorayaki?" he asked, watching her skeptical expression on her face.
"no! no, i do," she said quickly, bordering on panic because of kuroo's words. "it's just- it's really nice, but you don't have to do that."
"i know."
what was all he said, and he was still sitting in front of her, pulling out his water bottle.
he pretended it was not something he had heard several times before. it wasn't like yn wanted to push him away, but she couldn't help but say it whenever he did something nice for her. she was used to being alone, so having someone do nice things for her wasn't easy. it wasn't as simple as showing to everyone that she was capable of taking care of everything.
but kuroo was still there, unimpressed with her attempts to push him away. he wasn't angry with her for doing it, nor was he pitying her for it. it was as if he knew it was something he had to get through, but instead of talking about it, he just had to show yn that he knew he didn't have to do anything, and he was doing it because he wanted to.
"thank you," she said quietly, opening the dorayaki packet and passing it between them to share.
"i didn't know if you like more sweet or salty snacks, but i saw you eating milk buns at the cafeteria so i guessed."
yn paused between bites of her dorayaki, the warm feeling spreading inside her again.
how sweet was that?
she was ready to say it out loud, admit that it was probably the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her, but kuroo had already done a lot of nice things for her, and she couldn't tell which was better or worse because they were all just... too good to be true.
but then the girl appeared at the classroom doors again.
"it's her!" yn exclaimed, pointing to the doors, but when kuroo turned around to look, there was no one there.
this was just plain embarrassing, she must have heard yn shout and get scared again.
"am i insane?"
kuroo chuckled and set down his dorayaki. instead of taking the water bottle, as yn expected, he reached out and grabbed her chin between his fingers, allowing her to easily tilt her head to the sides.
if yn wasn't confused, she would be flustered (she was the queen of multitasking, she was both at the same time but wouldn't admit it), because who wouldn't be with kuroo staring at them so intently.
"you don't look insane to me," he said, dropping his hand, leaving only a warm feeling behind. "though, you have a little chocolate on lips."
yn immediately wiped her lips with her hand, causing kuroo to laugh. she looked at her hand, which was clean.
"very funny," she huffed, realizing that he was joking.
"no, seriously," he replied right away. he only laughed because of how quickly yn got to cleaning herself up, without even checking where she got the chocolate.
kuroo took out a tissue from the pack on the desk and wiped her upper lip corner.
how was it possible for kuroo to remain in her thoughts for so long after a few nice gestures, that she didn't saw the girl trying to approach her for the rest of the day because she was so consumed with replaying those few brief moments in her mind? yn liked to believe that she was not easily distracted. not anymore.
