"take five, everyone."
kuroo let out a deep sigh at coach nekomata's words. he was in good shape and had great stamina, but this day of practice completely wore him out. not only him though, everyone seemed just as tired. they were plopping down on benches like dead flies.
"thank you, good lady," yamamoto cried out, as their manager, sawaya, began passing out water bottles.
"yuck," she shrugged, hoping he wouldn't try to kiss her on the hand, as he had done a few times before when he tried to thank her. sweaty boys were her absolute nightmare.
"hey, kuroo." yuuto had to pat kuroo on the knee to get his attention because all he could hear was his own heavy breathing. "why wasn't sawaya-san at our sleepover?" he asked, lowering his voice as if asking a prohibited question. he felt as if just acknowledging her presence would end in a punch in the face. and people thought that his sister was scary when sawaya looked like she wanted to kill someone all the time.
still, she was close to the team, whether she liked it or not, so why wasn't she invited to the sleepover?
"we tried to ask her once last year, when she first started as manager, but she just asked if there would be any girls and said she didn't want to come if there weren't," he said, picking up his bottle again to drink water.
"i wouldn't want to come if i were the only girl around you all," kenma mumbled, collecting a disapproving look from kuroo, which he ignored. kenma had a point, but they'd known each other for over a year, miwa should know by now that they were cool and that hanging out with them would be enjoyable.
"yn was with us last time," yuuto said, not thinking much about it, but the lightbulb above kuroo's head lit up.
"do you think it would be possible to start hosting our meetings at your place?" he asked yuuto, who was just as surprised as kenma. kuroo enjoyed hosting those events, and his mom even more so. but then he recalled what yuuto said second before. of course, it was about yn.
kuroo fought his own thoughts for a moment before deciding whether to propose this. yn had a lot on her plate, but he could tell from their late-night conversation that she also craved some of the typical teenage experience.
"if it was a regular thing, organized in advance, i don't see a problem, but i have to talk to yn about it," yuuto said, already excited by the idea. "she didn't mind last time, but it kind of came up last minute, and she likes to have things settled up earlier."
maybe if she had set aside one day specifically for it, it could relieve some of the tension? it wouldn't be a surprise outing that she'd most likely have to miss because she had other things to do, and she wouldn't have to worry about whether everything was fine at home because she'd be there. it seemed like a good idea. and she could always say no.
"we still can host at my house, if she says no, it's okay, don't push it," he said in a hurry. "i just thought it'd be cool. your place is bigger, you have awesome tv, and it would be great to carry on the tradition now that i'm finishing school this year."
"yeah, there's also yn there," kenma said with no shame, and kuroo had to stand up right away to walk it off. yaku, who was listening in on the conversation, laughed aloud at this reaction.
"yeah, so maybe sawaya-san will come!" yuuto said, completely unaware that this was not what lenma meant. he got too excited with the idea that kuroo would pass a tradition onto him, it was almost like he would be pointed as new capitain. "sawaya-san," he nearly cheered. yuuto knew how yn would react, and he was sure she would agree. he never did anything to weaken her trust in him, and it had its benefits. if akari wanted to host a sleepover, yn would probably have to interview all of her friends first and get the parents' personal phone numbers just in case.
"what?" she asked, hands on her hips.
"would you- maybe... want to come to the next sleepover?" he breathed out feeling stressed as soon as she looked at him. "my sisters will be there so you won't be the only girl! i'm not sure about akari, but yn would be there for sure."
the others watching this interaction had to admit that yuuto was a genuinely sweet person. it was really admirable that he was such a new member of the team, but he was already all about building a team bond for everyone, including the manager, who didn't like them very much.
"yn? you mean ln yn"? she asked, her eyes wide, as if it had just occurred to her that yuuto's last name was not a coincidence.
"yup," yaku nodded. damn, having yuuto there had a lot of benefits. one of them was that he no longer feared the older ln.
"okay, sure, just tell me when," she agreed instantly and smiled, which was odd, before walking away, barely holding happy jumps.
"you have to up your game, because it looks like she wants yn too," kenma joked, resulting in a smack on the head.
does he need to step up his game, though?
