"i need to go to the dentist," yaku said in fear, placing a hand on his cheek after popping a candy he got from lev earlier.
"sucks for you," kuroo sighed, not lifting his head from the desk. they were finishing a three-hour block of math, and even though it was never a problem for him, three hours of looking at numbers was a lot.
yaku huffed and kicked kuroo in the ankle. he went to the other corner of the classroom to spend the break with kuroo, at least he could get a more emotional response from him for that effort.
it hurt after another kick, so kuroo raised his head, ready to lecture his friend about how such behavior could result in serious injury.
the injury being possible broken bones in yaku's body, if he kick him again.
but when he glanced at yaku, he received a nod to the left, so instead of threatening him, he looked in the direction to see ln walking into their class.
"mrs. shizuku said you're tutoring other students," ln said, standing in front of the same girl kuroo had overheard bravely discussing her feelings about ln.
she no longer seemed proud of her opinion, as she shrank in her chair.
"so?" yn asked, tapping her fingers on the desk to rush the girl into responding.
"i-" she began, fixing herself in her chair to appear braver than she was. "i don't have time," she said, unsure if her excuse was enough.
"you don't?" yn hummed, tilting her head to one side. "what a shame," she sighed, not moving from her position. "do you think i'm dumb?" she asked, tapping her nails on the desk in a random rhythm.
"what? no, not at all," she responded right away. kuroo and yaku exchanged glances as they heard those words. it was almost funny to see how she crumbled in the presence of ln after gossiping so loudly about her.
"no? i think you do." yn rested her elbows on the desk to look at the girl of the same height, unconcerned about the length of her skirt when she bent in half, because she always wore safety shorts under her school uniform. "come on, be honest with me."
"i don't think you're dumb," the girl said immediately, cursing her best friend in her head for not showing up to school today. she was always the braver one in their friendship, and she would say something to get out of that situation.
"then why lie to me?" yn asked, her voice so full of pity that it almost sounded pouty. "i wouldn't hold much grudge if you just said you don't want to tutor me," she said, slowly standing up straight.
"i-i..." she began again, her voice filled with panic. the idea of ln holding a grudge against her felt like a sentence for the rest of her high school days. "i'm not even that good at chemistry, but kuroo-san is, he's really good, and he's a great tutor," she said, pointing to him behind her.
yaku opened his mouth, almost laughing at how this girl had thrown his best friend under the bus.
yn looked up from the girl to kuroo, who was still processing what just happened.
maybe a few days of thinking about ln led to that moment. he couldn't get her out of his mind, especially since earlier that day he had received a cookie from yuuto saying that 'yn baked them', because the girl in front of him didn't appear to be the type to bake sweet cookies for her younger brother.
"he is really great," yaku said, just to tease kuroo.
kuroo inhaled deeply to gather himself.
"and i have free time," he added with an awkward chuckle.
it's not like he was heartless, if she truly needed tutoring, he would help.
the problem was that she now looked frightening, unlike the person he had easily spoken to during yuuto's trial. she didn't seem as approachable as she did then.
yn moved to his desk and picked up a pen lying on it to quickly scribble something in kuroo's notebook.
"it's my adress, friday 5pm, i don't have time other day." she tapped the pen on the small note and placed it down before leaving class.
"what was that?" he asked his classmate in a higher pitch than he had planned.
"i panicked! she would kill me!" she cried out right away.
again, she probably wouldn't, kuroo had never seen her do anything illegal. also, he was good at observing people, and ln acted much calmer this year than she had in the past. still, her reputation remained unchanged, but anyone with eyes could see that she was more cautious in her actions, most likely in case yuuto saw her.
now that he wasn't there, she acted like she always did, which made kuroo think that she might want to be a good role model for him, but it also meant that she knew her behavior toward others wasn't so good. so, why act like it in the first place?
"now she will kill kuroo... damn, i really liked you, man." yaku patted his friend's shoulder and moved away to go back to his seat, as if he didn't agree with the idea of kuroo tutoring yn moments before.
yaku pretended not to notice how kuroo mouthed 'asshole' at him.
