it was supposed to be a date. kuroo planned to cook something together and watch a movie. just a cozy, stay-at-home date because his parents were out for the afternoon and evening, and he needed to take advantage of the opportunity because yn had fallen in love with his dog, and he wanted to give her as much time as possible to play with her while his parents were away.
he wasn't embarrassed about yn, she'd never make him feel embarrassed about introducing her to his parents. his parents were the problem.
yn's relationship with her family was complicated, and kuroo was doing his best not to throw her into the deep water and force her to meet his parents after only a few weeks of dates.
maybe he was overreacting.
how was he supposed to not overreact when his mom was constantly probing him with the most intrusive questions known to humankind? he didn't even know the majority of the answers, because there were some topics that were sensitive to yn, and he pretended they didn't exist. and he didn't need to know everything about her, yaku told him that they needed to have some 'tough conversations', but kuroo preferred not knowing instead of pulling his not-yet-girlfriend's tongue and making her uncomfortable for things that wouldn't change their relationship in the slightest.
kuroo knew something was wrong from the moment he opened the doors. he looked back to the driveway, but his father's car was missing and his mother's was parked in the garage, as it should have been given that both of his parents were out.
"everything okay?" yn asked, confused as to why they were standing in the doorway.
"yeah, come in," he nodded, letting her in first. which was a mistake.
"i knew it!" they heard from inside the house, and after a few long steps, kuroo's mom stood in front of them, smiling proudly. "i told you!" she said to her husband, slowly emerging from the living room, where they had to be waiting. he didn't look as excited as she did, but rather nervous or embarrassed.
"you were supposed to be out," kuroo huffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"we will go out, but first, please, let's get this over with and introduce yn," his mother said, as if she didn't already know who yn was.
yn cast a nervous glance at kuroo, resisting the urge to step closer to him. that is why he wanted to do it on their own terms, but his mom wasn't used to waiting for things and would do whatever she wanted when she was impatient.
"this is yn," he replied quickly. "we, uh, date." those words were still unfamiliar to him, but he loved them so much.
"ln yn," yn said, bowing respectfully to his parents. the least she could do was avoid embarrassing kuroo in front of his parents with his decision.
she was grateful that he was dreading meeting his parents, because it would be her first time doing so and she needed to prepare.
now it was just like ripping off the band aid.
"ln?" kuroo's dad asked, deep in thought. "as the ln izuru?"
"yes," yn nodded as she heard her father's name.
"ah, i worked with your grandfather on some things, very nice man."
for a brief moment, yn debated whether she should correct the man. it was an easy misconception, she would have thought the same thing if she hadn't known. correcting someone could be rude, but letting them believe they made a mistake was just as bad.
"that's actually my father," she explained, trying not to sound offended.
"oh," kuroo's father breathed out, making the same expression she had seen on kuroo's face when he was embarrassed by something. "are you his youngest-"
"shush, enough," kuroo's mom said, dismissing her husband. "go wait in the car," she ordered with a wave of her hand. he listened without arguing, probably relieved to be out of this awkward situation. "i couldn't wait to meet you officially, honey."
yn felt her cheeks warm from the older woman's affection.
"that's really nice," yn said, unsure what else she could say in that situation.
"kenma told me so much about you," she said, squeezing one of yn's cheeks. kuroo smiled apologetically, as if he was already planning to apologize for what had happened, but yn knew it was not his fault. it was better to just get over it.
"kenma?" yn asked.
"yes, he's like the son i never had," kuroo's mom laughed, causing a groan from kuroo. "you think i can get anything from that guy over there?" she pointed to her own son. "please, one question about you and he's running away with red face."
"okay, that is enough." kuroo opened the doors to hurry his mother. she simply sighed loudly and petted yn's cheek once more.
"come for dinner soon, alright? i really want to get to know you better, sweetheart."
"okay," yn agreed with a gentle smile.
when the doors locked behind kuroo's mom and they heard the car leave the driveway, yn couldn't stop laughing at kuroo.
"you're getting red from questions about me?" she asked, teasingly.
"shut up," he muttered, pushing her with his shoulder. "sorry for my dad." he considered apologizing for his mother, but he wanted yn to quickly forget what his mother had said, so he decided against it.
"it's okay," she said, waving her hand dismissively. "i know my dad is old, it's nothing weird that he thought he was my grandfather."
"my parents are not the youngest either," he said, but the words didn't sound as comforting as he had hoped.
"no, your parents are normal age to have a child your age, my dad is sixty-four."
kuroo let out a surprised gasp and placed his hand against his lips.
"i'm sorry," he quickly apologized for his uncontrollable response. he took a step closer to yn and pulled her into his arms. "it just came out of me."
"it's fine," yn chuckled, amused by kuroo's face buried in her shoulder. "that's how everyone reacts, don't worry about it."
"is your mom also-" he just couldn't make the words 'that old' go through his throat, but he had to ask, because he knew that at certain age it wasn't so easy for a woman to get pregnant and carry a child safely (as if it was safe for a woman at any moment).
"no, my mom is forty-three now," yn said, debating whether she should say more. "i don't know why they married, i never talked to them about it, but my guess was always that my mother needed money, my father had it, he wanted children, and she gave them to him in exchange for a comfortable life," she said, brushing her fingers through the hair on the back of his head. "i think she managed to fall in love with him at some point, because he was a really good father and husband while she was pregnant and after she have birth, but i watched him lost interest as soon as each of us got older. that's why i have so many siblings."
"she kept getting pregnant to keep him interested?" kuroo asked, and yn nodded, relieved that they had finished their conversation. it felt awkward to talk about it. "good thing you'll have me interested without doing absolutely anything."
"absolutely anything?" yn chuckled.
"absolutely," he nodded deeply, squeezing her tighter into his arms.
