Chapter Eight: Truth Or Dare
(Truth Or Dare, Part 4)
***
The bonfire crackled merrily in the fire pit, it and the full moon above providing more than enough light to see by. They were all sitting by the fire, drinks in hand and Peanut Butter Butterpops eaten by Allison and Kaitlyn, silent except for the soft hush of the lake, the crickets in the woods and the fire's crackle.
Hayden took a swig of her beer, the alcohol slipping down her throat. It wouldn't be her first choice, but she could swallow it down. She smirked as she remembered earlier in the night, when Jacob handed out the beers and he remarked to her, Nick and Allison that, since they were all nineteen, they were still drinking underage.
That had Hayden and Nick just look at each other, knowing smirks on their faces, and yell, "Legal down under!", and down the drinks. After, Nick had explained to Jacob the legal drinking age back home in Australia was eighteen, not twenty-one, so technically they were still legal to drink. Jacob didn't argue there as the others smiled or chuckled and Hayden and Nick just shared another grin and kept drinking.
But that had been a couple hours ago, and the mood had fallen flat, silence reigning supreme among them. If this was Dylan's idea of an epic, one last summer bonfire, then Hayden wondered if Dylan should reconsider it.
Or maybe she shouldn't have such little faith in her friend, as he put down the beer bottle and announced, "Okay! New idea! Party game!"
At that, a chorus of groans rose up and Hayden took another gulp of beer to cover up her annoyed face as Sarah lifted her head from Nora's shoulder to squint at Dylan with a "no chance" look before lowering it back down. But Dylan was undeterred as he pressed, "C'mon people, we might never see each other after tonight. Let's make some memories."
Hayden couldn't argue with that as she lowered the bottle, intrigue now on her face as the mood now shifted at the reminder of that.
"Well, what do you have in mind?" Kaitlyn asked.
"If he says charades, I'm gonna strangle him," Allison muttered, and Hayden let out a snort at the image of tiny Allison somehow managing to strangle Dylan, who was much, much taller than her.
"How about the ultimate game of secrets and lies? Truth or Dare, but Dylan-style," Dylan offered.
"What does a Dylan-style Truth or Dare even look like?" Hayden asked.
"You'll find out," Dylan replied, before continuing, "Okay, house rules are... someone asks you truth or dare, then you choose, and then you do. And there's no ifs, ands or buts."
"So like, normal truth or dare?" Kaitlyn asked.
"Should have guessed that'd be the case," Hayden muttered, a sarcastic edge to her voice.
