"I remember her." She started. "My mother, she was all I had before the whole WCKD. She got sick like many people did. It broke my heart, knowing she wouldn't be there for me like she always was. I woke up one day and went to take care of her like I always did. I brought up a glass of water to her room, only-"
Tears were on the brink of her eyes. I didn't know where she was going. The hate I have for her was still there, but some part of me told me that I should hear her out. You cannot chose who you fall inlove with, it just happens.
"O-Only when I came into her room I saw an image that I wish to forget. Blood was all around the room and I looked at her bed to see my mothers body laying lifeless there. I also saw a gun in her hands."
My mind went back to the moment Janson decided to shoot his own wife, my mother.
"When WCKD found me I was covered in dirt. I had just burried her body in the back yard. They picked me up and brought me to the building where I met you all. I got to meet everyone you see in the camp here, I knew you all before the Maze. I was depressed when I came in, not knowing how to cope with my mothers death. Aris found me one day hiding and crying in the corner. That is where our story started and it only grew stronger."
Flashbacks of the girl WCKD took in came into my mind. She was telling the truth as I had seen her on her first day, covered in dirt and red stains.
"We fell for each other, until he got send into the Maze. I was very much against it as I knew he would never remember me. I got closer to you Thomas."
She took a step closer to the poor boy, but he took a step back.
"We were best of friends as I imagine you would remember. We got closer and you fell for me, but I could never let go of Aris."
My heart broke at hearing it. Thomas was never her first choice, just someone to fill in a hole. It got me angry all over again.
"Why did you feel the need to share your poor sad story about your mom." Okay Cassie, that was kind of harsh.
Teresa took notice of my harse tone and even flinched a little bit.
"You know how it feels, Cassieopeia." I grimched at the name. "You also lost your mother to the Flare, same as I did."
"What is your point." I quickly said back.
"I just want you to understand."
"To understand what?" Aris spoke up, having heard everything as he stood still a few feet away from Teresa.
Teresa connected her eyes with mine, which confused me more.
"That feeling of loosing someone close to you has happened to millions of people." Her eyes moved back to Thomas. "You see WCKD as the bad guy, but truely they want what is best for everyone here."
I moved closer to Teresa. Does she not know about people getting put in the Maze, dying daily there. Coming back inside WCKD and getting hunged like a dead animal to find some stupid cure.
They are people, kids. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them get murdered and used as some animal in there. Even if it would safe people, why doesn't their life matter.
"Teresa, they kill kids." Thomas spoke my thoughts.
"You don't understand, Thomas. This will safe everyone and sometimes a sacrifice is needed for that."
"That sacrifice is over thousands of kids." I countered back at her, anger filling my veins.
"But it will safe thousands."
"Why would you even say something like this!" Thomas yelled at her, mkaing Teresa cower back in fear.
"I just want you to understand." She told him with a gentle voice. "You are my best friend even if you love me, you still are my best friend. I want you to understand on why I did it."
"Did what?" Aris said back, his eyes also showing confusion.
I am still unsure about the boy. Did they really fell inlove all again or was Teresa manipulating him to get him back?
Teresa turned around to look out onto the horrizon, the sun shining above the mountains. But I took notice on two lights that were clearly not the sun.
I moved back, away from the girl.
"You didn't." I shook my head slight, hoping it wasn't true.
"Don't fight them, please." Teresa pleaded, a tear rolling down her cheek. "I told them to keep you safe."
Her eyes were only on Thomas and I knew it now. She doesn't care about us or even Aris at this point. She only cared about her best friend.
