During the last case, Kuuga was preoccupied with his thoughts. He skipped school and returned his broken blade cane sword to the antique shop. He decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. While walking, Kuuga heard Ayumi scream and rushed to check it out. He found the Phantom Killer attacking a civilian woman with a knife. Kuuga then reunited with Conan and the others to help Ayumi, but he didn't have time to talk with Haibara about the organization incident.
Later on, Kuuga, Conan, and the others went to Sato to find the Phantom Killer, who had driven a Mazda Infini car to a secluded area near the neighborhood. Sato and the others then headed back to the Beika Police Station to speak with Megure on the phone and gather more information.
Sato: What? Only three suspects? Is that true, Inspector?
Megure, on the phone: That's correct. One was stopped at the cordon, and two were driving around the area. They're the only people who live in that neighborhood, don't have an alibi, and claim to have lost their master keys. I'll send those three over in their cars. You've gotten a glimpse of the Phantom Killer, so I want you to take a good look at them.
Sato: I'll do that, sir.
Sato hung up and reported to Takagi and the kids.
Sato: Now there are three suspects on their way here.
Takagi and the kids were excited.
Mitsuhiko: Didn't Ayumi-chan hear the criminal scream?
Genta: Maybe when he sees Ayumi, his face will change in panic!
Ayumi: Yeah!
Kuuga: I object.
Ayumi: Eh?
Kuuga: If those three meet you face to face and are captured, that's one thing... But what if we can't gather enough evidence and they go free? The criminal will hold a grudge against you. You don't know if he will seek revenge!
Mitsuhiko: Y-you're thinking too much, Kuuga-kun...
Kuuga: I'm saying... that you shouldn't take risks without solid proof!!!
Kuuga's eyes glowed with golden flames, his speech filled with outrage. His sudden outburst shocked Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta, as well as Conan, Haibara, Sato, and Takagi, who seemed surprised by his intensity.
Ayumi: B-but the only person who saw him up close is me. If those three people were wearing raincoats in the photos too...
Kuuga: If that's the case... why don't you recognize them from the photos or voice so we can determine who they are? So, if you don't meet them face-to-face, the criminal won't ever have to confront you.
Ayumi: But...
Conan: Kuuga is right. Meeting them face-to-face is too risky. No matter what those three did or didn't do, it's not worth taking the chance.
Kuuga: So, let's keep our distance and observe them, okay?
Ayumi: ... O-okay...
Kuuga and Conan looked at each other, nodded, and agreed to the decision to hide and observe the three drivers of the Mazda Infini.
Sato: Alright, let's go, kids.
As Sato and the others moved ahead, Conan noticed Kuuga looking unwell, so he left him alone and joined the rest. While leaving Kuuga behind, he closed his eyes, attempting to calm his bloodthirsty impulses. Suddenly, Haibara, who had also been left behind, approached Kuuga.
Haibara: Here...
Kuuga: Huh?!
Kuuga reacted with surprise as Haibara handed him a scarf. Despite his surprise, Haibara remained composed, offering him the scarf back.
