"So what do you think of this one?" Mariah said, holding a large, bronze earring in the shape of a whale to her ear.
"Tacky," Wyatt responded. "Why are the whale's eyes little green crystals?"
Mariah nodded.
"I get a very new-age religion vibe from this," she said. "Maybe the crystals are supposed to, like, charge your chakras or something."
Wyatt did not expect when he woke up that day that he would end up going through jewelry with Mariah, but a few hours trapped in the same small room without much to do quickly changed his mind.
He had already looked through all of Amy's DVDs, but since they were all stored in binders and didn't have cases, there wasn't much to look at. He and Mariah had both tried reading but after a few hours even that had gotten stale.
"What do you think?" he said pulling out a black metallic ring with a spider on it that seemed to take up almost the length of his finger. "Is it me?"
"Yeah, if you want to enter a goth phase, you'll be in good shape. You could be Dark Gliderman."
"It's Flyerman."
"Are you pretty set on that?"
Why did every person he talked to dunk on his superhero name? First, it was Rockstart, then it was those girls at lunch. Now even Mariah was trying to talk him out of it.
"Yes. Frick. I am. I chose it. I like it. Why does everyone keep saying it's a bad name?"
"Oh, I just- Sorry. I didn't mean it like that. Sorry, it's a good name. Very apt. I didn't mean to-."
"It's fine. I get it. You don't have to apologize. I'm just frustrated. Every single person tries to tell me it's a sucky name."
"I just wondered what helped you feel sure about the name you chose. I have one, I guess, but I just kind of happened into it. I didn't really choose it or anything. Honestly, before I came to the school, I didn't need one."
"What is your hero name?" Wyatt asked. He was sure he would have to have heard it at some point at the school, but he couldn't remember what it was
"I'm the Ghost. Well... it was more like people were calling the unknown vigilante that was 'terrorizing' the town the Ghost and that vigilante was me but I don't call myself the Ghost, if that makes sense.
"Eh, most people at the school don't really get called their superhero name anyway," Wyatt said. "I can name maybe 5 people at the school's hero names. Sally wants us to call her Queen Bee. Todd is Diverman, Gary Ghoul is Gary Ghoul, and Ryan is SuperRyan."
"Planetarium. That's William's."
"Wow. Well, that's..."
Weird, he thought to himself.
But he didn't want to be rude. William had gone out of his way to be nice and include Wyatt in things so instead he said:
"That's... a very William name."
"Yeah, it's not very good," she agreed. "I think it sounds more like a building than a hero. I wanted to tell him today during the group breakout that it wasn't very well optimized for search engines."
"You should have. It would have gotten his and Rockstarts attention off of us. Why didn't you do it?"
She shrugged.
"I didn't want to bother anyone."
"Bro, they bothered us the whole time. He deserved it."
She just shrugged.
