The I-89, midafternoon...
Glenn Rhee drove peacefully through the byroads of outer Atlanta, they were deep out into the countryside now. The only thing that was slightly suburban was the highway they were traveling upon, weary to steer around abandoned cars or bodies on the off chance. Overall, this day's worth of driving had been easy.
Elle had driven through the night while he had slept, in a mixture of upright sleeping and trying to lie down in the confined space. Eleanor however was just a little smaller, more flexible so she was able to curl up on the bench seat like a cat. Her head resting lightly on Glenn's thigh as she slumbered.
Fortunately, Tucker kept a wide variety of tapes and CDs in the truck because after four rounds of Ellie's Dope-Ass Mix, Glenn was ready for a change. Whatever CD he grabbed was a little more modern, full of early 90s punk rock. He actually wasn't sure how Elle was sleeping through Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine, and the roar of Daryl's motorcycle. For being a light sleeper the lull of the road beneath them must be keeping her asleep.
"Holy shit," Glenn muttered when he looked ahead of the RV, there was the nastiest traffic jam he had ever seen blocking all four lanes of the highway. Stretching across the southbound and the northbound sides of the I-89.
"What's– what's going on?" Elle mumbled as she woke up, attempting to sit up but nearly hitting her head on the steering wheel. Glenn subconsciously moved his hand down to block her head and continued to gaze at the road. "Holy shit," Elle spoke, fully taking in the mess of cars and trucks clogging the road.
"You see a way through?" Glenn called out to Daryl once he had cranked down the window.
"Yeah, I'll go up ahead, follow me." He instructed, using his small motorcycle to his advantage as he maneuvered through the cars. Leading the RV, the Cherokee, and the Ranger through the mess. They had abandoned Shane's Jeep a while back just because there was room for him and Tucker in the RV now that Jim and Jacqui weren't there.
Elle still almost blames herself for what happened, she was so focused on getting her mom out that she put Jacqui on the backburner. Merely calling for her once before making a run for it, Elle hoped that Jacqui was following her but she never turned around to see if she really was.
"Oh my god," Elle breathed, the scene around her was gut-wrenching. Cars were flipped over and covered in blood, entire families still were sat in their vehicles. Slumped over and lifeless as if they'd been executed.
"I know," Glenn agreed, following slowly behind the RV before it came to a quick halt, white smoke billowing over the sides. "Shit, not this again."
"If that thing couldn't fit so many damn people I'd destroy it myself." Elle huffed, making sure her gun was in her belt before popping open the door. Glenn followed suit as they made their way to the RV, watching like a clown car as half of their group came tumbling out.
