"I swear you'...
Everyone stood up and we all moved into the dining area.
I scanned the room as people took their seats, and settled down beside Saisha. But then, I suddenly felt a wave of eyes on me—everyone was staring.
Wait... am I not supposed to sit here?
“Um, what’s going on?” I asked, not really expecting a clear answer.
“Well, beta—”
Before Gauri aunty could finish, Rudra jumped in, practically spilling the explanation in one breath. “Arey Nandini di, we have this family custom— the wife sits to the right of her husband. So, Ani bhai is at the head of the table and you’re supposed to be on his right, which is actually my bhabhi’s seat.”
What the fudge? Not again!
I felt my cheeks burn as the reality sank in—I’d once again made a fool of myself.
From the corner of my eye, I caught Mr. Helper staring right at me.
“Oh! I’m so sorry, Mr. He... Oberoi,” I blurted out, stumbling over his name. “I’ll get up and, um, I should probably apologize to your wife too—though honestly, you still look like a bachelor to me, but never mind.”
I stopped myself mid-blabber. Nandini, seriously?
I glanced around, noticing that except for Dad, Parth, and his mother, everyone else was smiling—probably amused by my meltdown.
I quickly stood to move, but before I could, Mr. Helper raised a hand.
“No need to change seats now. You can sit here. And, um… I’m still unmarried.”
I blinked, nodded, and slumped back down, feeling a mix of relief and embarrassment.

From my peripheral vision, I saw everyone quietly start eating, no one speaking.
I forced myself to focus and silently picked at my food, wishing the ground would just open and swallow me whole.

If I said I’m not happy, would you believe me? Truth is, I’m not just happy—I’m the happiest I’ve ever been right now.
My eyes are fixed only on her. The way she smiles, teasing and bickering with the twins—it’s like everything else just fades away.
My thoughts shattered when Maa called out, asking me to take the curry.
I reached for the bowl, but just then, Nandini’s hand touched it too. I motioned for her to go ahead, but she shook her head and insisted I take it first. Giving her a stern look, she finally relented.
She gently took the bowl from me and ladled some curry onto my plate. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting that. I smiled at her and nodded for her to serve herself as well. She returned the smile and filled her plate.
