The first morning after my wedding

The first morning after my wedding.
And I haven’t slept a wink.

Not because I wasn’t tired—God knows I was—but because my mind wouldn’t stop spinning. That one moment kept playing on a loop…

When Mr. Oberoi applied the sindoor.
His fingers, his eyes, the quiet tremble that passed between us—
It still sends shivers down my spine.

I’ve been reading since the early morning, anything to distract my racing thoughts. Iykyk.

“Dii… you woke up already?”
Saisha’s sleepy mumble broke my trance as she hugged me tightly and promptly dozed off again, her arm flung across me like a child’s claim on their comfort toy.

Smiling softly, I adjusted the duvet to cover her properly and whispered, “Sleep well, Saisha.”

It was 9 a.m. now. I figured the rest of the house must be awake too. I slowly eased out of her embrace and tiptoed out of the room so as not to disturb her sleep.

As I descended the staircase, I spotted Anika aunty and Gauri aunty on the sofa, giggling over something on their phones. But the second they saw me, they quickly sat upright—expressions turning all formal and innocent.

“Arey beta, come sit!” Anika aunty smiled warmly. “Why did you wake up so early?”

I took the seat beside them. “Oh, it's nothing aunty. My sleep just broke early, so I got up.”

“Aunty?”
Both Anika aunty and Gauri aunty said it at the same time, in unison, like I had said something criminal.

Anika aunty clutched her heart dramatically and looked at Gauri aunty, faking a sob.
“Gauri, yeh sunke mujhe kaisi michmichi ho rahi hai…”

Michmichi?
That’s a new word for me. I’m definitely going to steal Anika aunty’s vocabulary.
It’s so... her.

“Um… did I say something wrong?”

“Yes, beta. You absolutely did,” Gauri aunty said, playing along, trying hard to keep a stern face.

And I?
Mentally crawling into a hole.
Day one post-wedding and I’m already offending people. Wow, Nandini.
Flawless start.

“I’m sorr—”

Before I could finish, they both burst into laughter. Full-blown, carefree laughter.

I blinked.
Did I… just make a joke?

“Such a cutie you are, Nandini!” Gauri aunty chuckled, reaching out to pinch my cheek.

Ouch. That woman is deceptively strong.

Anika aunty chimed in with a fond smile, “You’re our family now, beta. Don’t say sorry for everything. And the most important thing—don’t ever call me ‘aunty’. Call me Maa. Or Mom. Whatever you’re comfortable with.”
