30 minutes left for the baraat

30 minutes left for the baraat.
Technically, the baraat just needs to walk from one side of the mansion to the other—but trust my family to turn even that into a full-fledged parade.

And here I am—decked in layers of silk, embroidery, and God-knows-how-many kilos of jewelry.
I look beautiful, yes. Royal even.
But damn, I can’t breathe properly in this outfit.

I glanced at myself in the mirror.

Miss Nandini Rai is about to become Mrs. Nandini Shah.
My palms were sweating.
My heart? A mess of nerves.

Please, God. Let everything go smoothly today. I can't take any more shocks.

Trying to distract myself, I picked up my phone and started clicking pictures—alone.
Everyone had run outside to "see" the baraat. It hadn’t even arrived, and still they acted like celebrities were walking down the red carpet. So much excitement.

I was halfway through a pouty selfie when—

“Nandini,” came a soft voice.

I turned to see Asha aunty enter the room. I smiled instantly.

“Yes aunty—wait, forget that. Just tell me—do I look pretty?” I twirled for her, trying to shake off the anxiety.

“You look very beautiful, beta. But Nan—”

She didn’t get to finish.

A sudden uproar from downstairs made my heart drop.
That sounded like Bhai… yelling.

Shit. Now what?

Asha aunty tried to hold me back, but I didn’t listen. I needed to stop Bhai before he gave someone a nervous breakdown.
He always wanted everything to be perfect—but I didn’t. I just wanted peace.

Since morning, it had been madness.
Bhai, Vishal, SK, even Dad—they were running around like maniacs. They’ve given everything to this wedding.

I can’t let anything ruin it. Not now.

When I reached downstairs, the scene hit me like a slap.

Kaamini aunty was crying.
Mr. Shah stood with his head lowered.
And Bhai? Bhai was fuming, yelling at both of them with a rage I had never seen on his face.

What the hell happened?

“Bhai, what’s going on?” I called out, concern lacing my voice.

Everyone suddenly froze.

And then, Bhai turned to me. His voice sharp—too sharp.
“Nandini. Go back to your room.”

That was the first time in my life he spoke to me like that. My breath caught in my throat.

“But Bhai—”

“I said go back, Nandini.”

“I won’t,” I snapped. “First tell me what’s going on. Okay fine, you don’t want to tell me—” I turned to Rudra. “Rudy, please. What happened?”
