Anirudh stood just inside the doorway, his hands clenched loosely at his sides, watching Nandini surrounded by family.
The gentle hum of soft voices, the warm smiles, the comforting touches—they all felt like a fragile bubble of hope after the storm they’d been through.
But beneath that fragile hope, his heart ached with a weight that no words could carry.
He saw the way Nandini’s eyes shimmered with tears—tears not just of grief, but of slow, painstaking healing. And his mind drifted instantly to the quiet absence in their lives—the child they had lost, the little life that had never taken its first breath but had already filled their hearts.
That unborn baby. Their silent angel.
He swallowed hard, the lump rising in his throat tighter than before.
How could he hold himself together when he saw her like this? So fragile, so brave. He knew she cried this morning thinking about their baby.
The ache inside him deepened, threatening to spill over.
He clenched his jaw, trying to swallow back the emotions, but the dam broke quietly. A tear slipped down his cheek.
Without a sound, Anirudh turned away from the living room, the warmth and light suddenly too much.
He walked slowly up the grand staircase, each step heavy with memories and pain.
Once inside the solitude of his room, he closed the door softly behind him.
He pressed his forehead against the cool wood, his breath hitching.
For a moment, he let himself break down.
Silent tears fell freely as he mourned not just the child, but the battles she had fought, the wounds that still lingered beneath the surface.
No one saw him cry. No one needed to.
He allowed himself that quiet grief, knowing he had to be strong for Nandini, for their future.
But right now, alone in the dim light of his room, he let the sorrow pour out.
Because sometimes, the strongest men are the ones who cry in silence.
After wiping away the last of his tears and steadying his breath, Anirudh ran a hand through his hair and took a deep, grounding inhale. He knew he had to be strong—not just for himself, but for Nandini.
Quietly, he made his way back downstairs.
The room was still filled with soft conversations and warm glances, but his eyes immediately found Nandini. She looked up as he approached, tired but radiant in her quiet strength.
He sat beside her, reaching out to gently take her hand in his.
“Nandini,” he whispered, his voice low but steady, “I’m not going anywhere. Not now, not ever.”
