The air inside the house was warmer than he expected.
Not welcoming. Just… heavier.
Like the walls had soaked up every scream that never escaped her throat.
Nandini didn’t offer him a seat. She didn’t ask if he was hungry or if he needed water.
She simply walked ahead, arms crossed, spine straight, her bare feet brushing across the wooden floor.
Anirudh followed.
Each step echoed with memories.
Her laughter. Her dances. Her tear-stained silences.
Now… nothing but distance.
“You have four minutes left,” she said, standing near the window, not facing him.
He stopped near the door.
Didn’t move closer.
Didn’t dare.
“I came because I needed to see you,” he said quietly. “Not to defend myself. Not to ask for forgiveness. Just to know you were okay.”
She scoffed.
“Five days of watching me from a car says otherwise.”
He sighed. “I didn’t know how else to be near you. You didn’t want to see me.”
“I still don’t.”
Her words struck, but he didn’t flinch.
He deserved worse.
“I saw you vomit,” he said gently. “You were dizzy. Pale. Not eating.”
She turned sharply. “So now you’re spying on me?”
“I was worried,” he snapped back—his voice low but edged with helplessness.
“Something’s wrong. You’re not okay, Nandini. And don’t lie to me. Not anymore.”
There was a silence.
Then she said, her voice suddenly hoarse, “You weren’t worried when I was begging you to listen.”
His throat tightened.
“You’re right.”
Another pause.
A beat passed.
Then she added—soft, like a truth she hated to say, “And yet… you’re here.”
Their eyes met.
Neither looked away.
Something shifted in the room.
Familiar. Painful. Heavy.
“Why now?” she whispered.
“Because I can’t breathe knowing you’re suffering and I’m not by your side.”
A flash of something crossed her eyes—grief, rage, love—before she masked it again.
Her hand instinctively pressed to her stomach.
Just briefly.
Just enough.
Anirudh noticed.
His heart skipped.
