I was this close to kissing the floor—literally. My heel slipped, balance gave up on me, and I braced for the grand fall of the evening...
But just before gravity claimed me, a firm grip wrapped around my waist, halting my crash like a scene from a movie.
I gasped and looked up—straight into a pair of honey-brown eyes.
Warm. Gentle. Deep.
There was something in them... not just concern, but a softness, a quiet affection.
Like those eyes had something to say—something I couldn’t quite decipher.Wait... wasn’t he the same helper guy who helped earlier?
I usually hate unfamiliar faces. Strangers make me uncomfortable. But with him?
I felt safe. Strangely safe.
Before I could get lost any further in this eye-contact episode, the spotlight shifted—literally—onto us.
Oh crap.
Reality check.
I scrambled upright, cheeks burning from both embarrassment and... something else I didn’t want to name just yet.
“Are you okay, baacha?”
Bhai appeared beside me, visibly concerned.I nodded quickly, brushing imaginary dust from my dress.
“Yes bhai, I’m good! Let’s go—everyone’s waiting.”Without waiting for another question, I slipped away, beelining toward Dadu for comfort.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Bhai turning to the guy—Mr. Helper, I mentally nicknamed him—and thanking him sincerely.
I should probably thank him too... but that can wait.
Right now, I just wanted to breathe.
“Hii Nanduuu!”
A familiar voice pulled me into a hug.It was Aashi, all glam and glitter, her energy ten times brighter than the lights.
“Oh. My. God. Just look at you! You’re smokin’, babes!”
She winked, dramatically fanning herself as I let out a small laugh.“Thanks, drama queen.”
We’d known each other from childhood but became best buddies from three years now. Her dad and mine were school buddies, so we used to just... exist in the same space. No real conversations. No connection.
Until one random function changed everything.
Now? We’re practically inseparable.Best friends with a side of chaos.
And somehow, with her arms around me and Dadu smiling nearby, the chaos of earlier didn’t feel so overwhelming anymore.
But those honey-brown eyes?
Yeah... they lingered in the back of my mind.
Just then—
“Hey Nandini—”
Parth approached me with open arms, clearly expecting a hug.I stepped aside.
Not today. Not after everything.
He ignored me when I needed him the most, and now he wanted to act all chummy? No thanks.
“Baby, what hap—”
Before he could even finish, Dadu’s voice cut through.“Nandini beta, come here. The guests are waiting.”
