Late that night, the mansion was quiet.
The kind of stillness where time seemed to pause—where everyone had gone to their rooms, but sleep hadn’t yet arrived.
Nandini sat by the window in her room, draped in a shawl, her hand resting protectively over her belly.
The wind carried the faint rustle of trees, the distant hoot of an owl—and then, a soft knock.
She didn’t turn.
The door creaked open.
Anirudh stepped in, holding a small envelope. He didn’t come close. He didn’t even speak at first.
“I wrote this,” he said quietly, placing it on her side table. “Not because I expect forgiveness. Not because I think I deserve anything.”
She stayed still.
“I wrote it because... I want you to keep them all. I hope you'll read one day.”
He lingered for a second, as if hoping she’d look at him. But she didn’t. So he left.
The door clicked shut.
Minutes passed. Maybe hours.
And then her fingers brushed the envelope.
She opened it, heart tight.
