The ride back home was quiet, but not awkward.
Their hands were intertwined on the seat between them.
Anirudh drove with one hand, glancing at Nandini now and then, a soft smile permanently etched on his face.
Nandini, still leaning into the quiet afterglow of their office moment, stared out the window—though her thoughts were completely tangled in him.
As they stepped into the Oberoi mansion, the atmosphere had shifted from formal to cozy.
The evening was calm, the aroma of dinner lingering in the air, and soft laughter could be heard from the living room.
Just as they were about to sneak upstairs, they heard a familiar voice.
“Well, well, look who finally remembered there’s a home here!” Anika teased, walking in with a warm grin, holding a cup of chai.
Nandini tried to keep a straight face, but Anirudh—caught off guard—gave a sheepish smile.
“We just stepped out for some fresh air.”
Anika raised an eyebrow.
“Fresh air in your glass-walled office? Right.”
Nandini burst into a light laugh.
“It wasn’t like that, Ma…”
“Oh please,” Anika laughed.
“If I hadn’t raised this man, I wouldn’t know what he looks like when he’s falling head-first in love.”
“Maa!” Anirudh groaned, dragging Nandini toward the stairs.
“We’re leaving.”
“Good. And lock the door. Or better yet, someone might barge again this time” Anika called behind them, chuckling.
Upstairs, Nandini kicked off her heels and flopped onto the bed, still laughing. “She’s dangerous.”
Anirudh threw his coat aside and leaned against the doorway, admiring her.
“She’s not wrong, though.”
She blinked up at him.
“I am falling? Or I fell already,” he said, walking toward her.
Nandini smiled, heart swelling.
“I might catch you…”
That night, they didn’t talk about betrayal or past wounds.
They didn’t dwell on missing people or secrets.
Instead, they shared light laughter, half-burnt midnight cookies, and soft glances across the room.
The walls were still there — hers, his — but they were starting to crack, and something beautiful was slipping through.
Love.
Quiet, unexpected, and theirs.
---
The Oberoi Mansion woke up to a sudden clang! followed by a loud “Ouch!” from the kitchen.
“Rudraveer! You were supposed to hold the bowl, not drop it on my foot!” Saisha yelled, limping dramatically while holding her poor toe.
“It slipped! Not my fault your feet are everywhere!” Rudra shot back, making everyone in the living room burst into laughter.
In the center of the chaos, Dadi sat in her swing, sipping her tea.
“This is what peace looks like in this house,” she mumbled sarcastically.
Anirudh came down the stairs, adjusting his wristwatch, while Nandini followed in a pastel kurta, still rubbing her sleepy eyes.
Their gaze met briefly.
That soft, silent smile lingered longer than it should’ve.
“Good morning, lovebirds,” Omkara teased.
“You both look well-rested,” Shivaay said meaningfully.
Nandini immediately looked down, her cheeks going pink, while Anirudh tried hard not to smile.
Before anyone could tease further, Dadu cleared his throat.
“Ahem! I hope you all didn’t forget what today is.”
Everyone went quiet.
Then—
“Six months since this overdramatic wedding!” Gauri chimed in, clapping her hands.
“Half a year of being tied to each other!” anika completed with excitement.
“Emotionally. And legally,” Saisha added, laughing.
Nandini blinked.
“It’s already been six months?”
Anirudh looked at her, the corners of his lips curling.
“Time flies when you're trying not to fall for your handsome husband every day.”
“Oh, my god,” Rudy groaned.
“Cheesy alert!”
Dadi stood up.
“I want a party. Just a small one—cake, music, food, and everyone in pajamas.”
“What?”
“Yes!” Saisha and Anika cheered.
And so began the most chaotic pyjama party in the Oberoi mansion.
---
By evening, the living room had fairy lights, soft cushions thrown everywhere, popcorn bowls scattered, and a big cake in the center that read “Six Months & Still Not Divorced!”
Nandini giggled as Anirudh read it aloud, “Whose idea was this?”
“Mine!” Rudra raised his hand proudly.
“Sense of humor runs in the family.”
They cut the cake while everyone cheered.
Nandini didn’t expect it to feel so warm. The sound of laughter, teasing, food fights, and old photo albums created an unforgettable night.
Later, as she stood by the window sipping hot chai, Anirudh wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
“For what?”
“For staying… and not giving up on us before it even began.”
She turned to him, resting her head against his chest.
“I didn’t plan this. But… maybe it was meant to be.”
He kissed the top of her head.
“Happy six months, Mrs. Oberoi.”
And beneath the stars, their hearts celebrated not just time—but the slow, burning promise of forever.
