Kan walked straight into the lobby of Book's condo after getting out of the taxi he had called from the front of a well-known downtown mall. The older man had called to invite him here because he was planning to meet with a close group of friends and wanted Kan to join them.
Kan: I'm here.
Book: Okay, I'm coming down to get you.
After sending a message to the resident to open the door for him, he sat down on the sofa in that area to wait. To enter the inner area, one had to scan the resident's face, so despite having been here many times, he had never had to sit and wait in the lobby like this before. Usually, he would simply ride in with Book. He found it strange that he had to wait like this.
"Kan!" Book raised his voice. When Kan heard his name, he quickly stood up and walked over to see who it was.
Book led Kan up to his unit. Along the way, he mentioned that his two close friends had already arrived at the large guest room to help buy ingredients for tonight's dinner.
Kan followed Book inside the room. As soon as the door opened, music from the TV blared out, followed by the sound of a woman yelling at someone until the room echoed. Kan was taken aback when he heard it, inadvertently making a stunned expression as he turned to face the taller person standing next to him. But the other person did not seem alarmed at all, his face completely impassive, as if what was going on in front of them was normal and something he was used to seeing.
"Do not be surprised; you will get used to it," Book said as he walked across the room.
"Good evening," Kan said softly, his voice low with trepidation because the woman did not appear to be ready to receive guests.
Oh, good evening! I am Nun. "You must be Kan, right?"
But when the other person spoke up to greet him, her expression changed dramatically. She was all smiles now and appeared very approachable.
"Yes," Kan replied in a more relaxed tone.
"Have a seat first. Let me just clear up this little situation."
Nun motioned for Kan to sit at the dining table before marching into Book's bedroom and dragging his other close friend out. The friend's face was contorted with pain, not only from being dragged out of the bedroom against his will, but also from Nun twisting his ear in the process.
"Oh, ow, ow, Nun! That hurts!" the young man exclaimed, cursing the woman who had dragged him outside.
"I told you to help get things ready, but instead you went into the bedroom to chat with the guy in there."
"How was I supposed to know? If it was you, you'd choose the guy too."
"Well, you got me there; I can not disagree with that."
"So who is this?"
"This is Kan, Book's friend," Nun introduced the visitor, not allowing Book to say anything.
"Good evening," Kan said, with a puzzled expression.
"My name is Ken."
"Yes."
Everything seemed to happen so quickly that Kan struggled to keep up. But he tried not to think too hard about it. Kan was not surprised that everyone seemed so uninhibited around each other, given that Book had said they were close. He was just astounded by how different Book's friends' personalities were from his own, to the point where they did not appear to be close friends in the same group.
"Your friends are really funny, P'," Kan said to Book after Nun and Ken entered the kitchen.
"Yes, they are crazy like this. "You will get used to it eventually."
