Evelyn

"Is he really gone? I can go back home." Nathaniel asks, sitting on my window seat and putting on his shoes.

"Yup, I compelled him to leave you alone and to leave town and never come back," I explain.

"Thank you. I know I should have done something; I mean, I'm a police officer. I should have at least tried to protect myself, but I just...froze." He shakes his head.

"You're not just a cop, Nathan. You're a kid who had to grow up fast, and seeing that man again made you feel like you were back to your old life, facing those same fears. It's okay to feel scared and overwhelmed, and you ran to get away from him. That's what matters." Nathan looks up at me, his eyes filled with gratitude.

"Wait, how do you know where I live?" He looks at me, confused.
I laugh nervously. "The night my uncle went to the hospital, and after I checked on my friend, I saw you leaving the hospital, and I followed you home."

He chuckles, shaking his head. "Thank you." He smiles. "I should probably go home; thank you for letting me stay here."

"Are you sure you want to go home?" I ask, concern evident in my voice. "You're welcome to stay here as long as you need."

"Thank you, but I'm sure, and knowing him, he made a mess in my house, and I want to clean it up." He stands up.

"Okay, I'll drop you off," I tell him, grabbing my keys. We start heading down the stairs when I hear John speak from the kitchen.

"I'm Elena's and Evelyn's biological father. There. Now you know." He leaves the kitchen.

"What?" Jenna scoffs before leaving the kitchen, but stops when she sees me. "Did you know?"

"I...wish I didn't." I shake my head before she walks away.

"Thanks for dropping me off." Nathan smiles.

"Yeah, it's no problem," Evelyn replies as they walk through the clean yard.

"You know you didn't have to," he says.

"I wanted to." He shakes his head.

"No. You didn't have to clean the yard. I could have done it."

I smile. "I wanted to. But I forgot to compel him to clean inside the house; I just wanted him gone before I actually hurt him. "

"Oh, right, you haven't been invited in. Would you—" She cuts him off.

"No. I don't want you to invite any vampires into your house, not even me, okay? This is your safe place, and I don't want to ruin that." She shakes her head. Her phone dings, indicating a text. She takes her phone out to see Caroline's name pop up. "I gotta go. I'll see you later, okay? And remember, don't invite anyone in."

"Okay."

"What happened?" I ask as I walk into Caroline's house. "Hey, Stefan."

"Hey. So what's wrong?" He questions.

"Tyler knows about you and Damon," she says, looking between us. "He knows that Damon killed Mason. I didn't say a word."

"It's that woman, Jules. She had a run-in with Damon," he explains as we walk further into her house.

"Tyler was so upset." Caroline sighs. "The look on his face he was so betrayed. You're not gonna tell Damon, are you?" She looks between us but her eyes linger on me.
