"Evelyn? What are you doing here?" Nathan exclaims, jumping back in surprise as he closes the front door.

"Hey, sorry, didn't mean to startle you." I chuckle, sitting up from the porch swing.

"When did you get here?" He sits next to me.

"Not that long ago." I shrug, glancing at the sunrise. "Going to work?"

"Yeah. Are you okay?" Nathan asks, concern etched on his face.

"Why wouldn't I be?" I smile, trying to keep my tone light. "I just wanted to check in with you. We haven't hung out in a while."

"Evelyn," he says, his voice laced with concern. He reaches out to touch my hand, but quickly recoils. "You're freezing! Have you been here all night?"

"What? No, I just get cold easily." I try to laugh it off, but my smile feels forced. He gives me a look that clearly says he doesn't believe me. "Don't worry, I'm fine. Really."

"Is it because of Damon and Elena?" My smile falters, but I quickly recover. "I've noticed they've gotten closer."

I shake my head, trying to dismiss his question. "Not entirely." I get up and walk down the steps, avoiding his gaze.

"Then why did you come to my house last night?" My steps falter, and I turn to face him.

An idea sparks in my mind. "I was going to ask if you were going to homecoming."

"But I already—" I cut him off, a playful smile on my lips.

"I know, I know. You already graduated, but come on, it'll be fun. Plus, other than Bonnie and my Carebare, I don't like the rest of the students. I actually like you. Please?"

He laughs. "Okay, fine. I'll go. It's an honor to be liked by Evelyn Gilbert."

"The highest," I tease, returning his smile. "I'll see you later, okay?" He nods, and I turn to leave.

Flashback

"I called to see how my doppelgänger was doing," Klaus replies, his tone smug.

"Well, she's still the same annoying, bossy sister," I mutter.

"Guess bossy sisters just run in every family. And Stefan?" He questions.

"He's probably eating some person right now; I don't know." I shrug. "That sounds wrong."

"For the past few days?" He questions skeptically, ignoring my other comment.

"Well, his humanity is off, so..." I trail off.

"He's also compelled to protect the doppelgänger," he says, his tone sharp. "If I find out she's not being well protected, I'll go after your friend... Nathaniel, wasn't it?"
