The Last Day

'If whatever Elijah has planned doesn't work, then...' I sigh.

"What are you doing?" Damon asks as I lay down in his bed.

"Thinking," I answer, resting my arm over my eyes.

"Tonight is the full moon. We should assume that Klaus is prepared to break the curse."

"Elena said the sun and the moon curse is fake? That it's actually just a curse placed on Klaus." I sigh, getting up and walking downstairs with Damon behind me.

"Klaus is a vampire born of a werewolf bloodline. The curse has kept his werewolf aspect from manifesting. But if he breaks it...he'll be a true hybrid." Damon and I walk into the study.

"Then why are we letting him break the curse?" Damon questions and I cross my arms. "We can kill him today. With Bonnie."

"Damon..." Stefan leans forward in his seat.

"Yeah, I don't agree with that last part." I shake my head.

"Bonnie can't use that much power without dying," Elena tells him.

"I'll write her a great eulogy."

"It's not an option, Damon."

"Alright, how do we break this curse?" Stefan asks.

"Well, the ritual itself is relatively straightforward. The ingredients, so to speak, you already know." Elijah walks over to the armchair.

"The moonstone." Stefan nods.

"A witch will channel the power of the full moon to release the spell that's bound within the stone. After that, Klaus, being both werewolf and vampire, will sacrifice one of each."

"And where do I fit into it?"

"The final part of the ritual." He takes a box from the bookshelf. "Klaus must drink the blood of the doppelgänger...to the point of your death." I shake my head, but before I can say anything, Elena speaks up.

"And that's where you come in."

He takes an old looking glass bottle. "This is an elixir that I acquired some 500 years ago for Katerina. It possesses mystical properties of resuscitation."

"So I'll be dead..."

"And then you won't."

"That's your plan? A magical witch position with no expiration date? You want to come back to life; what about John's ring?" I nod, agreeing with Damon.

"Those rings only work on humans. The doppelgänger's a supernatural occurrence. Odds are...the ring won't work." Elijah looks at us.

"We'll take those odds over your elixir," Damon counters.

"What if it doesn't work, Elena?" I walk closer to her.

"Then I guess I'll just be dead." She looks at me.

I look at Stefan silently, asking him to tell her something, but he looks away. "No." I shake my head. "There has to be another way without getting you or Bonnie killed."

"There is no other way, Evelyn!" She closes her eyes. "I'm sorry, but there's no other way." I look between her and Stefan before walking away.

Outside, Damon sips Bourbon while Evelyn seeks fresh air to calm her anger when Stefan steps outside.

"Breakfast of champions, huh?"

"We're surrounded by idiots. We need all the help we can get," Damon says.

"You know you're not helping," Stefan tells them, and Evelyn sighs.
