The night was still, a stark contrast to the chaos that had defined Simon "Ghost" Riley's life for the past months. He had been deployed in some of the most dangerous territories, leading missions that tested his limits and pushed him to the brink of exhaustion. Now, after what felt like an eternity, he was finally coming home. The thought of Y/N, his safe haven, was the only thing that had kept him going during the darkest moments.
As Ghost stepped off the plane, the cool night air filled his lungs, a welcome change from the suffocating heat and tension of the battlefield. His face, partially concealed by his iconic skull mask, softened as he thought about Y/N. He had missed her more than words could express.
The drive from the base to their home was a blur. He had been away so long that he had almost forgotten the comfort of familiar surroundings. When the car finally pulled up to their house, a small, cozy place nestled in a quiet neighborhood, his heart pounded with anticipation.
He approached the front door, his steps uncharacteristically hesitant. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. This was the moment he had been longing for, but also the one he had feared. What if things had changed? What if she had grown distant?
Ghost unlocked the door and stepped inside, the warmth of the home immediately enveloping him. The soft glow of the living room lamp cast a welcoming light, and the faint smell of Y/N's favorite vanilla candles filled the air. He closed the door behind him, taking in the familiar sights and sounds that made this place home.
"Y/N?" he called out, his voice rough from disuse.
From the kitchen, he heard a clatter of dishes and then quick, light footsteps. Y/N appeared in the doorway, her eyes widening in surprise and then filling with tears of joy.
"Simon!" she exclaimed, rushing towards him.
He opened his arms, and she threw herself into them, holding him tightly as if afraid he might disappear. Ghost buried his face in her hair, inhaling the comforting scent of her shampoo. In that moment, all the tension and pain from the past months melted away.
"I'm home," he whispered, his voice cracking.
Y/N pulled back slightly, just enough to look into his eyes. She cupped his face in her hands, her thumb tracing the edge of his mask. "I've missed you so much," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "Every single day."
Ghost removed his mask, revealing the man beneath the soldier. His eyes, usually so cold and calculating, were now filled with warmth and love. "I missed you too, more than you'll ever know."
She leaned up and kissed him, a kiss that spoke of longing, relief, and unending love. It was a kiss that healed wounds and bridged the distance that had separated them. When they finally parted, they rested their foreheads together, savoring the closeness.
"Come on," Y/N said softly, taking his hand. "I made your favorite dinner. I wasn't sure when you'd be back, but I wanted to be ready."
Ghost let her lead him to the kitchen, where the table was set with candles and a hearty meal. He marveled at her thoughtfulness, her unwavering support. This was what he had fought for, what he had endured the horrors of war to return to.
They sat down to eat, and for the first time in months, Ghost felt at peace. They talked about everything and nothing, catching up on the little things that made up their lives. Y/N told him about her days, the projects she had been working on, the friends who had come by to keep her company. He listened, grateful for the normalcy, the simple joy of being with her.
After dinner, they moved to the couch, where they curled up together under a soft blanket. Ghost held Y/N close, his fingers gently stroking her hair. The silence between them was comfortable, filled with the unspoken understanding of two people who had found their way back to each other.
"Thank you for waiting for me," he said quietly, his voice filled with gratitude.
Y/N looked up at him, her eyes shining with love. "I'd wait forever for you, Simon."
As they settled into the quiet rhythm of the night, Ghost knew that no matter where his missions took him, no matter the dangers he faced, he would always have a home to return to. Y/N was his safe haven, his sanctuary in a world of chaos. And with her by his side, he could face anything.
