The night was still and heavy, the air filled with the lingering tension of a battle narrowly won. The mission had been a success, but it had come at a cost. The team had faced overwhelming odds, and it was only through a combination of skill, luck, and sheer determination that they had all made it back to the safe house in one piece.

Kyle "Gaz" Garrick sat on a worn-out couch, his mind replaying the events of the day. He could still hear the gunfire, feel the heat of explosions, and see the determined face of his lieutenant, Y/N, leading them through the chaos. She had always been a strong and capable leader, but today she had been extraordinary, risking her life to save them all.

Y/N walked into the room, her face etched with exhaustion but her eyes sharp and alert. She carried a small first aid kit, ready to tend to any wounds her team might have. Gaz watched her as she moved, his heart pounding with a mix of admiration and something deeper, something he had been trying to suppress for far too long.

"Everyone alright?" she asked, her voice steady despite the fatigue.

"Yeah, just a few scrapes and bruises," Gaz replied, trying to sound casual.

She nodded, her eyes scanning the room, ensuring everyone was indeed okay. When she was satisfied, she turned her attention to Gaz. "How about you? You took a pretty hard hit back there."

"I'm fine, LT," he said, using the title out of habit. "Just glad we all made it."

Y/N sat down next to him, opening the first aid kit. "Let me see," she insisted, gently pulling up his sleeve to examine a cut on his arm.

As she worked, Gaz couldn't take his eyes off her. Her touch was gentle but firm, her focus entirely on making sure he was alright. The closeness, the concern in her eyes, it was almost too much to bear.

"Y/N," he began, his voice hesitant.

"Hmm?" She glanced up at him, her expression questioning.

"Earlier today, when things got bad... I thought I was going to lose you," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

She paused, her hands stilling for a moment before continuing to bandage his arm. "But you didn't. We're all here, and we made it through."

"Because of you," Gaz said, his voice growing stronger. "You were incredible out there. You saved us all."

She gave a small, tired smile. "Just doing my job."

"No," Gaz shook his head. "It was more than that. Y/N, I've been wanting to tell you something for a while now. After today, I can't keep it to myself any longer."

Y/N looked at him, her eyes wide with curiosity and a hint of apprehension. "What is it, Kyle?"

He took a deep breath, gathering his courage. "I care about you, Y/N. More than just as my lieutenant. More than just as a friend. I... I love you."

Her eyes widened in surprise, her hands freezing mid-motion. "Kyle, I..."

"I know it's complicated," he rushed on, afraid of her rejection. "I know we're in the middle of a war and there's so much going on. But I had to tell you. I had to let you know how I feel. Because today, when I thought I might lose you, it made me realize that I can't keep this inside any longer."

Y/N was silent for a moment, her eyes searching his face. Gaz's heart pounded in his chest, every second feeling like an eternity.

Then, she smiled, a soft, genuine smile that lit up her tired features. "Kyle, I've felt the same way for a long time. I was just afraid to say anything. Afraid it might affect our team, our missions."

Relief flooded through him, and he reached out, taking her hand in his. "We can figure it out. Together."

She squeezed his hand, her eyes shining with emotion. "Together," she agreed.

In the quiet of the safe house, amidst the aftermath of battle and the promise of more challenges ahead, they found a moment of peace. Gaz leaned in, his forehead resting against hers, and for the first time, they allowed themselves to simply be. No titles, no ranks, just two people who had found something worth fighting for in each other.

"I love you, Y/N," he whispered, his voice filled with conviction.

"I love you too, Kyle," she replied, her words a balm to his weary soul.

As they sat there, hand in hand, they knew that whatever the future held, they would face it together. Their love, forged in the fires of battle, was a beacon of hope in the darkest of times. And for Gaz, that was more than enough.
